Men’s Basketball Controls Second Half to Upend Second Place Post

PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University Men's Basketball Team outscored Post 35-22 in the second half, as the Tigers defeated the second place Eagles 65-55 on Saturday afternoon inside of the Campus Center. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Elijah Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./Our Savior Lutheran (Westchester CC)) led all players with 16 points on 6-of-9 field goals and 4-of-5 3-pointers
  • Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek (Sacred Heart University)) fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and a game-high nine boards
  • Semaj Bethea (Camden, N.J./Camden) led all players with five assists
  • Matt Gardler (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) was also in double-figures with 11 points and a team-high two steals

  • Holy Family outshot 49.0-33.9 percent, shooting a season-best 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from beyond the arc
  • The Tigers held significant advantages in points in the paint (30-18) and fastbreak points (21-12) 
 
How it Happened
  • Hernandez scored eight straight points, and after back-to-back Karrington Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Central Connecticut State University)) baskets, CJ Mundell (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) hit a 3-pointer to complete a 15-2 surge for a first-half-high 28-17 edge with 5:43 left in the first half
  • Post would close the period with a 16-2 flurry though, making back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 35 seconds for a 30-33 lead entering the locker room
  • After the two teams traded triples to open the second, back-to-back Garlder 3-pointers sparked 12 unanswered that established a six-point-plus cushion for good
  • HFU held the Eagles scoreless for over five minutes in the stretch, which ended with a Di'Andre Howell-South (Paterson, N.J./Immaculate Conception (Wagner College)) layup putting the Tigers ahead 45-36 with 12:47 left
  • Post got as close as six on four occasions, the final time coming at 59-53 with 2:33 to go
  • Coursey would respond with the next six points, highlighted by back-to-back dunks, to seal the victory
