Men’s Basketball Surges Past Dominican in Final Minutes

PHILADELPHIA – In a game played within two possessions, the HFU Men's Basketball Team held off Dominican, 83-78, inside of the Campus Center on Saturday afternoon.

Individual Highlights
  • Elijah Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./Our Savior Lutheran (Westchester CC)) and Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep (American International College)) had the game's two highest point totals with season-bests of 22 and 21, respectively, as the duo combined to shoot 17-of-28 from the field
  • Di'Andre Howell-South (Paterson, N.J./Immaculate Conception (Wagner College)) led the Tigers in rebounding, falling one board shy of a double-double as he added 12 points and matched Hernandez with a game-high three steals
  • Hernandez also paced all players with six assists, while Matt Gardler (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) had 12 points too

Inside the Box Score
  • Dominican made nearly double the amount of free throws, 13-25, but HFU would control the inside with edges in points in the paint (42-32) and second chance points (10-2)

How it Happened
  • A Jett 3-pointer established a first-half-high 29-24 lead 7:38 ahead of the break and after DC pulled within one, he beat the buzzer for a 40-37 edge entering the locker room
  • Eight straight points gave the Chargers their largest advantage, 52-56, with 12:24 to go, but the Tigers responded with 10 unanswered – six of which were by Hernandez – for the game's largest lead with 9:25 left
  • Dominican runs of seven and then six sandwiched an HFU run of four for a 66-69 advantage for the Chargers with 4:49 to play
  • After the two teams traded 3-pointeres, back-to-back baskets by Karrington Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Central Connecticut State University)) and Hernandez put the Tigers back on top 73-72 entering the final two minutes
  • Dominican came right back down the floor to regain the lead, before it was Jett putting HFU ahead for good, 73-72, on a jumper at the 1:27 mark
  • Gardler followed with a steal and fastbreak layup, and the Tigers would seal the victory by making 6-of-6 free throws in the final 18 seconds
