Women’s Lacrosse Takes Control in Third Quarter of Win Over Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA – After neither team led by more than one in the first half, the HFU women's lacrosse team took control with an 8-3 third quarter in a 15-11 victory over Chestnut Hill at Tiger Field on Wednesday night. 
 
Tied at 6-6 six and a half minutes out of the break, Gwen Varley (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) scored three times in the span of less than three minutes, capping four unanswered for a 9-5 advantage with 5:40 left in the penultimate period. 
 
The Griffins got as close as three on three occasions, but each time Holy Family had an answer. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Varley matched Rianna Shields (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) with a game-high four goals, a new season-best, with Shields also topping the Tigers with two assists
  • Payton Pugh (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) led all players with a career-high eight draw controls and four caused turnovers
    • The senior moved into 10th in program history with 125 career draw controls and had two ground balls to move into fifth with 139 
  • Tori Wolstenholme (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) had a team-high four ground balls, seven draw controls, three goals, two assists and two caused turnovers
    • The graduate student moved into second in program history with 53 career assists
  • Abby Perkins (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) had four ground balls too, a new season-best, while Lexi Ryan (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) had a season-high six draw controls
  • Jocelyn McLaughlin (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and Nicole Wiser (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) with both second with three caused turnovers, new season-bests, with Wiser also making four saves in net
  • Taina Harkins (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) matched Shields and Wolstenholme with two assists
