MELBOURNE, Fla. – After a 4-0 shutout of Walsh in its first game, the HFU softball team used a four-run seventh featuring three two-out runs to stun Cedarville, 6-5, in its nightcap on Thursday.
Trailing 2-5 entering the seventh, the Tigers got their comeback started with back-to-back singles by
Rylee Hobel (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and
Madison Grubb (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway). Following a flyout, a
Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) fielder's choice cut the deficit to two.
Down to the final out,
Erin Stilton (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) and
Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) came through with RBI base knocks, a double and single, to tie it before an error brough home the go-ahead run.
Molly Moore (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) would then retire the side in order in the bottom-half to earn the complete game victory.
Individual Highlights
- Just two of the five runs given up by Moore were earned as she improved to 2-1 on the year
- Game one starter Kinsley Hall (Frankford, Del./Indian River) also threw a complete game, earning her first win of the season with a 15-strikeout performance that featured no walks and just three hits allowed
- Grubb and Stilton both finished 3-for-4 with an RBI in the comeback
- Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) reached base twice in both games, going 3-for-7 with a hit-by-pitch
- Gina Olivieri (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Charter School) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener
How it Happened
Walsh
- Hall retired 17 of the first 18 she faced, and HFU finally broke through with a four-run fourth that was more than enough run support
- The first two Tigers were retired in the frame, but Hagy's hit-by-pitch and Lily Hoban's (Millsboro, Del./Indian River) single set the stage for three consecutive RBI singles by Kylee Jones (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)), Gabrielle Wiley (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and Olivieri
- The sixth was the only inning in which a runner reached scoring position, but Hall would strike out the side, and HFU added unneeded insurance with a Ciasullo RBI double in the bottom-half
Cedarville
- After HFU stranded the bases loaded and Cedarville scored two unearned runs in the first, a Hoban leadoff walk in the second led to her coming home on a two-out single by Grubb to halve the deficit
- Neither team scored again until a two-run Cedarville fifth, and the Yellow Jackets then countered Hoban's RBI single in the sixth with another unearned run in the bottom-half
