The HFU track & field program received three of the four major awards handed out by the East Coast Conference (ECC) for the indoor season, it was announced on Tuesday.
Nishorn Pierre (Grenada/Jamaica College) and
Dwight Brandon three-peated as the respective Male Athlete of the Year and Men's Coach of the Year, while
Ocelia Jones (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Maggotty) was named the Female Athlete of the Year.
Nishorn Pierre (Grenada/Jamaica College) – ECC Indoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Year
Pierre topped the league in both the high jump (2.14m) and the triple jump (15.16m), qualifying for the NCAA Championships in both. There he would earn All-America honors in each event, including his third consecutive nod in the high jump.
He was also named the Most Outstanding Athlete of the ECC Championships for the second time after winning a pair of gold medals in high jump and triple jump, breaking the meet record in the latter.
Dwight Brandon – ECC Men's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year
Brandon is now a seven-time conference coach of the year after leading the HFU men to a third consecutive ECC title. The Tigers totaled 147 points to runner-up Roberts Wesleyan's 133.
Ocelia Jones (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica/Maggotty)– ECC Indoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year
Jones was top five in the league in three events, including topping the ECC in the 60m hurdles with an NCAA provisional of 8.73 to win gold at the championships. The sophomore also anchored the 4x400m relay team that won gold, and she placed second in the 400m with a time of 59.11.
