UPPER CHICHESTER, Pa. – The HFU baseball team overcame a six-run Bloomfield ninth inning to win game on a
Jephson Hadson-Taylor (Cheltenham, Pa./La Salle College (University of Maine)) walk-off single, 11-10, before exploding for eight runs in the fifth inning of the 11-4 nightcap to earn a sweep over Bloomfield at Maplezone Sports Institute on Wednesday afternoon.
Individual Highlights
- Brian Comer (Charlotte, N.C./Independence (Bucks County CC)), Torin McKenzie (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham (Mercer County CC)) and Jalen David (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) all reached base multiple times in both games
- Comer: 4-for-8 with a walk, hit-by-pitch, two doubles, three RBI, run and two stolen bases
- McKenzie: 3-for-5 with three hit-by-pitches, a home run and two runs
- David: 3-for-7 with a walk, hit-by-pitch, triple, five RBI, three runs and two stolen bases
- Stefan Leo (Golden, Colo./Golden Senior (Porterville CC)) scored three times in game one thanks to reaching on two hits – including a double –and a base on balls
- Kaden Mannis (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown (Morton College)) joined McKenzie in homering in the opener, while Jon Martinez (Camden, N.J./Timber Creek Regional (Camden CC)) homered in the game two
- Christian Mote (Branchburg, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's School (Iona University)) made it six Tigers recording multiple base knocks in game one, and he also scored twice
- Casey Murphy (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion (Ursinus College)) picked up the win in the opener after coming in get record the final out in the top of the ninth, while Hunter Kraiza (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Cabrini University)) earned the victory in the nightcap after closing out the fifth
- Game two starter Alexander Ortiz (Hebron, Conn./Lyman Memorial) threw four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits
- Luke Shahin (Ajax, Ontario/Archbishop Denis O'Connor(Augusta University)) and Any Rivera both had two hits and a double in the nightcap, with Shahin driving in two runs and Rivera scoring twice
- Griffin Richardson (Warminster, Pa./Greenville (Bucks County CC)) reached base in all four at-bats, finishing 1-for-1 with a walk, hit-by-pitch, three runs and two stolen bases
How it Happened
Game One
- Holy Family appeared to be in control ahead 10-4 entering the ninth, and the Tigers were still up 10-5 with two outs, but Bloomfield would tie it up with a grand slam
- The Tigers responded in the ninth though, beginning with a David walk and Comer hit-by-pitch, prior to Hadson-Taylor's walk-off
- HFU got on the board with a three-run second that featured singles by McKenzie, Mote and Leo, the latter of which drove in a run, prior to Mannis' two-run homer
- The Tigers also plated three in the seventh, as McKenzie was hit by a pitch, Mote singled and Leo walked to load the bases, before David and Comer drove in runs on a sacrifice fly and two-run double
Game Two
- After the Bears erased a 0-2 deficit with a two-run fifth, HFU sent 13 to the plate in the bottom-half, recording seven hits
- Martinez brough home the game-winning runs with a two-run homer after a McKenzie single
- Mote, Richardson, Rivera (double), Shahin and David then produced five consecutive hits, totaling four more runs, before a groundout and wild pitched closed out the scoring
