PHILADELPHIA – In a game that was played within two goals, the HFU men's lacrosse team was narrowly defeated by D'Youville, 10-11, on Wednesday night at Tiger Field.
Trailing 6-8 entering the fourth after four straight goals by the Saints,
James Bienia (East Moriches, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) and
Jake Feeney (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) scored less than three minutes apart to tie the things up with 9:33 to go.
The two teams would then alternate goals, with
Xander Kelly (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) and
Noah Simpson (Oshawa, Ontario/Henry Street) evening the score at 9-9 and then 10-10, the latter of which was with 4:40 left, before D'Youville netted the game-winner with 3:03 on the clock.
Holy Family had two chances to tie it up again, but Simpson was denied by the crossbar with 1:07 remining, and the Saints were able to run out the clock.
Individual Highlights
- Feeney tied a game-high with three assists, while Simpson tied a game-high with three goals, as both finished with a team-high four points
- Simpson also matched Jayden Williams (Mays Landing, N.J./Atlantic County Institute of Technology) with a team-high five ground balls
- Kelly had four points too, on two goals and two assists, to go along with a team-high two caused turnovers
- In addition to leading HFU in ground balls, Williams led all players with 12 faceoff wins
- Bienia had two points on a goal and an assist, while Maxx Covely (Somerdale, N.J./Highland), Bradley Smith (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) and Andrew Kayes (Margate City, N.J./Holy Spirit) also scored
- James Demakopoulos (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) made 11 saves
Inside the Box Score
- Holy Family held advantages in shots (48-33), ground balls (44-35) and faceoffs (13-9), but the Saints made 19 saves
