DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Holy Family University baseball team had the tying run in scoring position and the potential go-ahead run at the plate, but Mercy was able to escape with a 4-5 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.
Trailing 3-5 after two unearned runs in the eighth,
Jalen David (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) got a potential comeback started with a leadoff walk. He then stole two bases and following a
Jephson Hadson-Taylor (Cheltenham, Pa./La Salle College (University of Maine)) walk and pitching change, came home on
Dalton Turner's (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy (Bucks County CC)) RBI groundout.
With Hadson-Taylor, who had stolen second himself, in scoring position, the Mavericks were able to get the final out.
Individual Highlights
- Brian Comer (Charlotte, N.C./Independence (Bucks County CC)), Marc Garcia (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area Senior (Keystone College)), Garrison Pregulman (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral (Los Angelas Pierce College)) and Kaden Mannis (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown (Morton College)) all had two hits
- Mannis' two-hit performances was the first of his HFU career, highlighted by a two-RBI single in a three-run fourth
- Garcia also drew a base on balls and scored, while Pregulman scored once and drove in another
- Starter Brian Williams (Glenside, Pa./Roman Catholic (Bucks County CC)) retired 13 of the final 15 he faced to finish with a line of two runs allowed on five hits, with five strikeouts against one base on balls, over five innings
- Hunter Kraiza (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Cabrini University)) did not surrender a hit in his 1.1 relief innings
How it Happened
- HFU erased Mercy's two-run first with the three-run fourth that featured back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Pregulman and Mannis, after Garcia and Stefan Leo (Golden, Colo./Golden Senior (Porterville CC)) had drawn back-to-back walks with one away
- The Tigers had multiple runners reach in both the fifth and sixth, with a potential fourth run cut down at the plate on a double steal in the latter, and Mercy carried that momentum in to the bottom-half to tie the score at 3-3
- Holy Family then loaded the bases in the seventh, but the threat was ended on an inning-ending double play
- The Tigers returned the favor in the bottom half as David recorded an outfield assist for the fourth game in a row to keep the score tied
- The Mavericks took advantage of error that extended the eighth though, allowing them to plate the go-ahead and game-winning runs
