Men’s Lacrosse Downed By Wheeling’s Strong Second Half in Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University men's lacrosse team led by three twice in the first half, but Wheeling scored nine of the final 11 goals to defeat HFU 10-14 at Tiger Field on Saturday afternoon. 
 
After the Cardinals scored twice in the opening 1:43, HFU came back with six of the next eight goals, two of which were on the power play by Noah Simpson (Oshawa, Ontario/Henry Street), to go ahead 6-3 on a Jake Feeney (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) score 4:03 into the second quarter. 
 
The Tigers then responded to two goals by Wheeling with two of their own, by Feeney and Andrew Kayes (Margate City, N.J./Holy Spirit), to take an 8-5 lead with 3:08 left in the first half. 
 
The Cardinals both closed the first half and began the second half with scores, but Xander Kelly (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) re-established a multi-goal cushion just 40 second out of the break. 
 
Following three unanswered from Wheeling, Kelly tied it up one final time at 10 with 13:17 to go before the Cardinals ended the contest with the final four scores. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Kelly netted his first career hat trick and added an assist for a team-high four points
  • In addition to scoring twice, Simpson matched James Demakopoulos (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) and James Bienia (East Moriches, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) for a team-high with four ground balls
  • In addition to the four ground balls, Demakopoulos made eight saves in net and matched Jackson Brown (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May) with a team-high two caused turnovers
  • Feeney also had an assist to finish with three points 
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family outshot Wheeling 48-40, but the Cardinals doubled up the Tigers in faceoffs, 9-18
