PHILADELPHIA – A potential buzzer did not fall as the HFU men's basketball team was defeated by Wilmington, 75-76, on Saturday afternoon inside of the Campus Center.
Prior to the game, the Tigers honored the Senior Class of
Vernon Johnson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck),
Elijah Jakeman (Philadelphia, Pa./Abraham Lincoln),
Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) and
Tairi Ketner (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll).
Holy Family led by as many as 14 in the first half but found itself down 65-74 late, prior to a
CJ Mundell (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) three-point play with 5:07 left sparking a comeback.
Following a Wilmington free throw, a
Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek) layup and Johnson 3-pointer cut the deficit to 73-75 with 3:06 to go.
After the Wildcats made yet another foul shot, Coursey answered with a layup again to make it 75-76 with 1:55 on the clock.
Those would be the final points of the afternoon, as HFU could not take advantage of three WilmU turnovers down the stretch.
Individual Highlights
- Johnson led all players with a season-best six assists, while Holmes pulled down a team and career-high eight rebounds, to go along with 11 points
- Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) poured in a game and season-best 25 points, while Coursey added 18 on 9-of-13 shooting
- Mundell made it four Tigers in double-figures as he finished with 10 points and game-highs of two blocks and two steals

How it Happened
- Holy Family scored the first six points on back-to-back 3-pointers by Jakeman and Jett and did not trail for the first 30:47 of gameplay
- A Coursey layup put the Tigers ahead 38-24 with 3:10 left in first half, but a Wilmington triple would cut the deficit to 37-47 entering the locker room
- The Wildcats took their first lead, 61-62, on a layup with 9:13 remaining, as that was part of 11 unanswered to on top 61-69 with 7:07 to play
