No. 19 Women’s Basketball Surges Past Dominican in Battle of CACC Unbeatens

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – In a battle of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) unbeatens, the No. 19 HFU women's basketball team overcame a five-point deficit in the final two minutes to prevail 71-67 at Dominican on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Trailing 59-64, the Tigers outscored the Chargers 12-3 over the last 1:46 beginning with 10 unanswered. 
 
Amy Ngo (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) started the comeback with a layup before a Kara Meredith (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) 3-pointer tied the score at 64 with 1:22 to play. 
 
Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) then put HFU ahead on a jumper with 29 seconds on the clock, and the Tigers sealed the victory by making five free throws over the final 11 seconds.  
 
During all of this, Holy Family made four consecutive stops before Dominican made a triple in the last second.
 
Individual Highlights
  • Ngo led all players with a season-best 19 points on 7-of-8 field goals, 2-of-2 3-pointers and 3-of-4 free throws
  • Hinkle pulled down a game and career-high 20 rebounds to move into ninth in program history with 643 for her career
    • She added 14 points for 11th double-double of the season
  • Lola Ibarrondo (Bristol, Pa./Neshaminy) had 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while Carolyn Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) recorded 12 points, seven boards and a team-high five assists

How it Happened
  • Holy Family led 34-22 thanks at the half to a 19-3 stretch over the end of the first and beginning of the second that featured nine Ibarrondo points
  • Dominican scored the first nine points of the third quarter as part of a 3-16 surge to go ahead 37-38 with three minutes left in the period, but the Tigers responded with 10 of the final 12 points over the last 2:52 to go back on top 47-40 entering the fourth
  • Jessica Riepe (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) then began the final quarter with another triple, only for Dominican to come back with 10 unanswered to tie the score at 50 with 8:07 to go
  • Six consecutive Chargers points gave them the first of two six-point leads, the second coming at 55-61 with 3:45 remaining, before a triple made the score 59-64 entering the last two minutes
