Volleyball Reverse Sweeps Two Seed Adelphi in First Round of NCAA Tournament

WALTHAM, Mass. – The HFU Volleyball Team reverse swept second-seeded Adelphi, storming back from two sets down to defeat the Panthers (23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12) in five in the first round of the NCAA Tournament hosted at Bentley on Thursday afternoon. 
 
The comeback extended an impressive streak that has now seen the Tigers win an NCAA Tournament match in each of their four appearances (2018, 2019, 2021).

Holy Family advances to the second round, where it will face third-seeded Mercy at Bentley tomorrow at 4 p.m. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Mia Wise (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) led all players with 52 assists and four aces, while adding 12 digs for her 11th double-double of the year
    • The freshman now ranks third in the program's single-season history 1,337 assists
  • Shelby Kinzer (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) and Mackenzie Layton (Clarksboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) tied for a match-high with 22 kills apiece
    • Kinzer added 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the year
  • Morgan Marziani-Radomski (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) also had 12 digs, while Kalia Espenlaub (New Market, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep (Millersville)) and Leah Logan (Bloomfield, N.J./Abundant Life Academy) each had team-best three blocks

  • In a match in which Holy Family tallied one more point, its biggest advantage came in the form of doubling up AU in service aces, 12-6
 
How it Happened
  • Trailing by two sets and 12-14 in the third, Holy Family regained momentum with four consecutive points featuring kills by Layton, Kinzer and Espenlaub
  • The Tigers then broke a 23-23 tie with the final two points of the set, as an Espenlaub kill sent the match to the fourth
  • Tied at nine in the fourth, a Kinzer kill capped four unanswered that put HFU ahead by multiple points for good in the set
  • The Tigers then never trailed in the fifth, as Kinzer opened the scoring with back-to-back kills
  • Adelphi came back to tie it at nine once, but Layton both started and ended three unanswered before Kinzer tallied Holy Family's final three points on kills
