Volleyball’s Season Ends with 1-3 Loss to Three Seed Mercy in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Holy Family University Volleyball Team won the first set, but the Tigers' 2025 season came to end with a 1-3 loss (25-16, 21-25, 20-25, 16-25) to three seed Mercy in the second round of the NCAA Tournament hosted at Bentley on Friday evening. 
 
Picked to finish fourth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division in the preseason coaches' poll, HFU was one of final four teams competing in the entire East Region.  
 
Individual Highlights
  • Mia Wise (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) had double the amount of aces as any other player with four, while falling one assist shy of a match-high with 36
    • The freshman's finishes the year with 1,373 assists and 68 aces, good for third and seventh in the program's single-season history
  • Kalia Espenlaub (New Market, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep (Millersville)) led Holy Family with 12 kills on .320 hitting, while Mackenzie Layton (Clarksboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) was also in double figures with 10 kills
    • Layton ends the year with 409 kills, now ninth in the program's single-season annals
  • Shelby Kinzer (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) topped the Tigers with nine digs, to go along with seven kills
    • Her 411 kills are now eighth in the program's single-season history 
  • Ava Kidd (Walton, Ky./Larry A. Ryle (Saint Anselm)) matched Wise with a team-high two block assists to end her career ninth in program history with 126
    • Her .355 hitting percentage this year is now second in the program's single-season annals   
  • Leah Logan (Bloomfield, N.J./Abundant Life Academy) added a block to finish the year sixth in the program's single-season history with 84 
 
How it Happened
  • Holy Family did not trail in the first set, breaking a 6-6 tie with 14 of the next 17 points 
  • Mercy responded to the 0-1 deficit with the first five points of the second, and despite the Tigers battling back to tie it at both 20 and 21, the Mavericks evened the match which the final four points of the set
  • HFU led by as many as five in the third, 13-8 as back-to-back service aces by Wise highlighted four unanswered, and the Tigers were still leading 17-14 following an Espenlaub kill
  • Mercy came back with the next five points though, taking the lead for good as it ended the set on a 3-11 run
  • The Mavericks then broke an 11-11 tie in the fourth with a 2-7 flurry en route to the victory
