PHILADELPHIA – In a game played within five points, Assumption prevailed over the No. 20 HFU Women's Basketball Team in overtime, 54-58, inside of the Campus Center on Saturday afternoon.
After the Greyhounds tied the score at 47 with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, the Tigers had a potential buzzer-beater roll around and then off the rim.
Assumption would tally the first three points of the extra period and lead throughout, despite HFU cutting the deficit to two on four occasions.
Trailing by 52-54 entering the final 30 seconds, the Tigers had two opportunities to tie miss, and the Greyhounds would make two free throws with 22 seconds showing.
Kara Meredith (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) pulled HFU within two, 54-56, one final time with eight seconds left, but AU sealed the victory with two more foul shots to cap going 7-for-8 at the line in overtime.
Individual Highlights
- Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) led all players with 19 rebounds and three steals and added a team-high 14 points to surpass 1,000 for her career
- Skyler Searfoss (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe Area) was also in double-figures with 11 points, to go along with a team-best three assists
- Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) neared a double-double with nine boards and eight points, while adding two steals and a block
How it Happened
- Assumption took the first five-point lead with the first five points of the fourth quarter, capping a 0-7 run with 9:04 remaining
- A Searfoss three-point play tied the score at 43 with 3:34 left, before a Hinkle jumper put HFU back ahead 47 seconds later
- The Greyhounds evened it back up with 38 seconds showing, only to have two Meredith free throws make it 47-45 with 29 seconds on the clock
- Assumption countered with a layup nine seconds after though, setting the stage for the Tigers' potential game-winner
