Women’s Basketball Starts Fast in 71-55 Season-Opening Win Over Saint Michael’s, Giving Laukaitis Her 100th win at HFU

STATEN ISLAND – The HFU Women's Basketball Team scored the first eight points and never trailed in a season-opening 71-55 win over Saint' Michael's at College of Staten Island on Saturday night. 
 
It was notably the 100th career victory at Holy Family for Head Coach Bernadette Laukaitis.  
 
Individual Highlights
  • Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) led all players with 18 points, 17 rebounds and a career-high five assists
  • Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) and Lola Ibarrondo (Bristol, Pa./Neshaminy) were also in double-figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively
  • Kara Meredith (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Ella Brown (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), making her collegiate debut, chipped in with nine points apiece
  • Also making their collegiate debuts were Shania Howard (Naugatuck, Conn./Holy Cross) and Maya Hill (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy)
  • Kaelah Carter (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker (The College of Saint Rose)) recorded a game-high four steals
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Both teams shot an identical field goal percentage, 41.8, but HFU had 12 more attempts thanks to winning the rebounding (41-35) and turnover (10-15) battle
  • The Tigers held a 19-5 edge in both points off turnovers and second chance points
 
How it Happened
  • Dougherty poured in the final six of the first eight points 
  • An Ibarrondo jumper to make the score 16-5 with 2:41 left in the first quarter made it a double-digit cushion for good
