Men’s Basketball’s Late Push Falls Short Against Goldey-Beacom

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing by 11 with less than eight minutes remaining, the HFU men's basketball team made a push to within four before eventually falling short against Goldey-Beacom, 71-80, on Tuesday night inside of the Campus Center.

Down 46-57, Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) started and ended an 11-4 stretch, with 3-pointers by Karrington Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and CJ Mundell (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) in-between, as his 3-pointer cut the deficit to 57-61 with 5:16 to play.

A Lightning four-point play on the next trip down the floor killed the momentum though, and despite Mundell answering with a layup the Tigers could never make it a one-possession game.

Individual Highlights
  • Jett led all players with a season-best 22 points, while falling one rebound shy of a game-high with eight
  • Mundell stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds, and team-highs of three assists, four steals and three blocks, the latter two of which led all players
  • Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) also had 16 points on 5-of-9 field goals and 4-of-5 3-pointers

Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family outrebounded Goldey 39-32, but the final deficit was decided at the free throw line, where the Lightning held a 7-17 edge

How it Happened
  • HFU cut into an 11-point deficit with an 8-2 surge that featured back-to-back 3-pointers by Holmes and Mundell and a layup by Elijah Jakeman (Philadelphia, Pa./Abraham Lincoln) to make it 18-23 entering the final minutes of the first half, but GBC closed the period with the last nine points for an 18-32 halftime score-line
  • The Lightning then opened the second with two foul shots for a game-high 16-point advantage
  • Holy Family got as close as 32-39 with 14:40 to go after back-to-back baskets by Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek) and a Jett triple, but the Tigers could not make it a two-possession deficit until the late run
