ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The HFU men's basketball team had Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CAC) leader Dominican on the ropes, ahead by three in the final 20 seconds of regulation only to have the Chargers tie the game before prevailing 80-89 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Holy Family trailed by as many as 19 in the first half and did not lead until back-to-back 3-pointers by
Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) capped eight unanswered for a 57-54 scoreline with 11:31 to play in regulation.
The Tigers did not trail the rest of regulation as they eventually used six straight points to go up by as many as 67-61 on a
Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek) layup with 7:42 left.
Dominican tied it four times down the stretch, including at 73 going into the final minute, but again it was Coursey coming through as he converted a three-point play with 47 seconds showing.
The Chargers sunk a triple with just 20 second remaining though, and HFU missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer.
The Tigers could then never take a lead in the extra period, despite two
CJ Mundell (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) free throws knotting the score at 78 with 3:55 to go.
After three consecutive DC points, a
Vernon Johnson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) layup cut the deficit to one with 2:33 left, but the Chargers closed the game with the final eight points.
Individual Highlights
- Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) led Holy Family with 20 points and a game-high eight assists, both of which were career-bests
- Coursey added a season-best 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting
- Jett and Josiah King (Irvington, N.J./Linden) were both in double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively
- Mundell fell one point and one rebound shy of his second double-double of the season as he finished with team-highs of nine boards and a game-high three steals

- Dominican was ahead 23-42 going into the final six minutes of the first half, but HFU began its comeback with 15-4 surge over the last 5:02 that featured five Tigers scoring to help cut the deficit to 38-46 entering the locker room
