LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team scored the first 11 points, but it was not enough in a 66-75 loss at Georgian Court on Tuesday night.
Individual Highlights
- Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek) tied a game-high with nine rebounds and had the second highest point total with 15, both of which were season-bests
- Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) joined him in double-figures with 13 points, to go along with eight boards
- Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) (three assists) and Karrington Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood) (two blocks) both tied game-highs
- Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) contributed nine points
Inside the Box Score
- HFU outrebounded GCU 43-32, leading to a 19-2 edge in second chance points, but the Lions shot better from the field and the final deficit was nearly decided at free throw line, 17-25
How it Happened
- Holy Family got off to a fast start with Coursey and Shields combining for the first eight points, before a Jett 3-pointer made it 11-0 less than four minutes in
- The Tigers were still up nine, 19-10, on a Shields layup with 10:54 left in the half, but GCU would respond with 12 unanswered in less than three minutes to take its first lead
- That first half lead reached as large as six, 27-33, entering the final two minutes, but a Tyler Meinel (Warrington, Pa./CB South) 3-pointer and two Coursey free throws helped cut the deficit to 32-35 heading into the locker room
- Georgian Court opened the second with the first six and nine of the first 11 points to build its first double-digit advantage, 34-44, less than three minutes into the second
- HFU got as close as 42-46 when Vernon Johnson's (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) 3-pointer capped six straight points with 14:58 remaining, but the Tigers could never make it a one-possession game despite one final push of seven in a row making the score 58-64 on a Coursey layup with 6:36 left
