Baseball Completes CACC-Opening Sweep of Chestnut Hill with Late Heroics

NORTH WALES, Pa. – The HFU baseball team swept its first ever Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) series, using late clutch hitting to defeat Chestnut Hill 10-9 and 6-2 and on Friday.

Zach Morales (Barrington, N.J./Triton Regional (PSU-Abington)) hit a walk-off home run in game one, before the Tigers broke out for a six-run sixth in the seven-inning nightcap.

Individual Highlights
  • Morales' homer was his second of the opener, putting a stamp on a 3-for-5 performance in which he both scored and drove in three runs
  • Dalton Turner (Langorne, Pa./Neshaminy (Bucks County CC)) also had multiple hits, multiple RBI and a homer in game one, before coming through with a game-tying two-run double in the six-run sixth
  • Game two starter Casey Murphy (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion (Ursinus College)) recorded his third consecutive complete game win, allowing just one earned run on two hits as he struck out eighth against one base on balls
  • Brian Comer (Charlotte, N.C./Independence (Bucks County CC)) and Gino Serechia (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton (Shepherd University)) both had perfect nightcaps, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk and 1-for-1 with two walks, respectively, with both scoring in the six-run sixth
  • Jon Martinez (Camden, N.J./Timber Creek Regional (Camden CC)) homered in the opener, before capping the six-run sixth with a two-RBI double
  • Game One starter Jelle Bing (Heerhugowaard, Netherlands/CSG Jan Arentsz (McCrook CC)) recorded a quality start, surrendering two earned over six frames
  • Denis Szychulski (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge (Bucks County CC)) relieved him, earning his first win at HFU with three innings of work

How it Happened
First Game
  • Holy Family led 6-1 after three innings, thanks to a four-run second that featured a two-RBI single by Emidio Bucci (Gambrills, Md./Loyola Blakefield (York College)) and a two-run homer by Turner
  • Chestnut Hill chipped into the lead, eventually going ahead 6-7 with a three-run seventh
  • The Tigers had an immediate response through, in the form of home runs by Martinez and Morales that re-established a 9-7 cushion
  • The Griffins took advantage on a two-out error to tie it in the eighth though
  • Just when it looked like the game was destined for extra innings following the first two outs of the ninth, Morales sent his walk-off over the right field fence
Second Game
  • Murphy kept HFU in it and the bats finally broke out in the sixth, beginning with Dylan Mercedes' (Washington Heights, N.Y./St. Raymonds (Mansfield University)) leadoff single
  • After the first out, Stefan Leo (Golden, Colo./Golden Senior (Porterville CC)) walked and Bucci singled to load the bases
  • Turner then came through with his two-run double to tie it, before the eventual game-winning run came in on a wild pitch
  • Serechia walked to load the bases once more and after a Comer bunt single doubled the advantage, Martinez put a stamp on the frame with his two-RBI double
