Baseball Storms Back to Defeat Chestnut Hill 12-11 in Program’s First CACC Game

NORTH WALES, Pa. – Trailing 4-9 after four and 19-11 after seven, the HFU baseball team scored three in its final two at-bats to defeat Chestnut Hill in the program's first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Wednesday afternoon.

With the game tied at 11 entering the ninth, the Tigers took advantage of a leadoff error to eventually score the winning run after an Isaac Criss (Grove City, Pa./Grove City (Bucks County CC)) walk and back-to-back hit-by-pitches by Jon Martinez (Camden, N.J./Timber Creek Regional (Camden CC)) and Dylan Mercedes (Washington Heights, N.Y./St. Raymonds (Mansfield University))

Up Next
The two teams return to North Wales to complete their three-game series on Friday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader that has been moved up a day due to impending inclement weather.

Individual Highlights
  • Stefan Leo (Golden, Colo./Golden Senior (Porterville CC)) led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance that included five RBI and a double
  • Martinez, Zach Morales (Barrington, N.J./Triton Regional (PSU-Abington)) and Emidio Bucci (Gambrills, Md./Loyola Blakefield (York College)) also reached base three times
    • Martinez homered in a three-RBI performance that included two hit-by-pitches
    • Morales went 2-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs
    • Bucci drove in multiple runs too, finishing 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch
  • Dalton Turner (Langorne, Pa./Neshaminy (Bucks County CC)) notably hit his first home run as a Tiger
  • Christian Culver (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman (Bucks County CC)) picked up a second straight win in relief, as he struck out four over two innings with two hits allowed

How it Happened
  • Holy Family jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Leo's two-out double in the first, which featured with a Brian Comer (Charlotte, N.C./Independence (Bucks County CC)) single, Criss base on balls and Mercedes hit-by-pitch
  • The Griffins answered by scoring in each of their next three at-bats to go ahead 4-9, cancelling out RBIs by Leo and Bucci in the top of the third with a three-run bottom-half
  • Reliever Ian Malone (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne (Desales University)) kept HFU in it with a scoreless fifth and sixth, and the Tigers knotted it up once more with a five-run seventh that featured both of their homers
  • Following CHC responding with two in the bottom-half, it was Leo coming through with a two-out, two-RBI single after Morales had extended the frame with a base on balls
