Women’s Lacrosse Erases Early Deficit; Shippensburg Pulls Away in Season-Opener

PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team fought back from an early 0-3 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the second quarter, but Shippensburg would pull away in the second half for a 7-17 win in the two teams' season-opener at Tiger Field on Saturday afternoon.   
 
Individual Highlights
  • Maura Kilkenny (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Little Flower Catholic) led all players with a career-best five ground balls, while adding a team-high of a career-best four draw controls, three caused turnovers and three goals
  • Payton Pugh (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) matched Kilkenny with four draw controls and a career-high three caused turnovers, while Tori Wolstenholme (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) also netted a hat trick and had a caused turnover
    • Pugh moved into a tie for sixth in program history with 50 career caused turnovers, while Wolstenholme moved into a tie for eighth with 48
  • Taina Harkins (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) had three caused turnovers, as well as an assist, in her collegiate debut
  • Also making her collegiate debut was Abbie D'Ambra (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), who finished second on the Tigers with four ground balls and added two caused turnovers
  • Freshman Olivia Kueny (West Deptford, N.J./Holy Cross Preparatory Academy) made 11 saves in her collegiate debut
  • Faith Zehnder (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood), Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), Jocelyn McLaughlin (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem), Symia Brazleton (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) and Renee Althoff (Lancaster, Pa./Solanco) all made their collegiate debuts as well

  • Holy Family outshot Shippensburg 14-13 in the first half, but the Raiders held a 23-33 edge for the game
  • The Tigers had more ground balls, 21-18, and clears, 11-10, while Ship had the edge in draw controls, 11-17
 
How It Happened
  • Both teams scored three unanswered in the first, with HFU coming back from an early 0-3 deficit just 8:47 in
  • The Raiders closed the first quarter scoring with just six seconds on the clock, but Kilkenny came back with the first two scores of the second to give the Tigers their only lead with 7:05 left in the first half
  • Shippensburg tallied the final two goals of the second period though, before scoring the first 10 of the second half
