First Quarter the Difference in Women’s Basketball’s Loss at Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family women's basketball team could not overcome a 15-26 Chestnut Hill first quarter in a 64-73 loss to the Griffins on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers pulled within three for the first time since the quarter when a Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) layup made it 64-67 with 44 seconds left, but CHC iced the game with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession.

Individual Highlights
  • Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) finished with the game's second highest point total, a career-best 28 in just 29 minutes, while adding a game-high 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season
  • Carly Bolivar (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka (Alliance)) had double the number of assists as any other player with 10
  • Jessica Riepe (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) was the Tigers' next-leading scorer with 10 points, while Ava Morrow (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) and Dougherty added eight points and five boards apiece

Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family's bench outscored CHC's 18-6, but the Tigers could not overcome a 6-29 deficit in points off turnovers, despite committing just three more, 19-16

How it Happened
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers by Morrow and Kara Meredith (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) gave HFU a 6-3 edge two and a half minutes in, but CHC responded with 12 unanswered to take the lead for good
  • The Griffins beat the first quarter buzzer for their third double-digit advantage of the period
  • Back-to-back triples gave CHC a game-high 16-point cushion, 21-37, entering the final four minutes of the first half, and Griffins were still up 12 going into the final two minutes, but the Tigers would close with the final six points as a Riepe layup cut the deficit to 35-41 entering the locker room
  • Chestnut Hill tallied six of the first eight third quarter points to re-establish a double-digit lead, but a Meredith triple got HFU as close as five, 49-54, at the 1:37 mark of the third
  • After two Hinkle free throws then made it 51-57 going into the final period, the Tigers pulled within five again, 54-59, on a Riepe 3-pointer with 6:40 to go
  • Trailing 59-67 with less than two minutes left, a Hinkle three-point play and defensive stop allowed Dougherty's layup to make it a one-possession score-line
