Men’s Basketball Closes Out Road Schedule at Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA – Despite a late push, the Holy Family University men's basketball closed out its road schedule with a 73-86 loss at Chestnut Hill on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing by a game-high 14 with eight and a half minutes to go, five straight Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton (Jefferson University)) points got the Tigers within 71-77 entering the final four minutes, but the Griffins responded with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Individual Highlights
  • Ethan Pires (Dover, Del./The Pennington School (Millersville University)) produced the game's second highest point total with 20, one shy of a season-best, and he led all players with a season-high two blocks
  • Tazir Cantey (Lindenwold, N.J./Eastern Regional) was right behind him with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting
  • Aamir Hurst (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann Goretti) and Shields both scored 13 points, with Hurst dishing out a career and game-high five assists and Shields topping HFU with four rebounds

Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family won the turnover battle 9-15, leading to a 20-11 edge in points off turnovers, but CHC won rebounding battle 19-39

How it Happened
  • Pires hit two 3-pointers less than a minute apart and Cantey followed with a layup to give HFU its largest lead, 24-16, 9:47 into the action
  • Chestnut Hill came right back with 11 in a row though, beginning 3-13 surge that would put the Griffins ahead for good on a layup that made it 27-29 with 7:48 left in the first
  • After another Cantey layup got the Tigers as close as 31-33, a 6-16 stretch capped by a triple gave CHC its first double-digit cushion, 39-49, 1:47 ahead of the break
  • A Hurst layup brought the scoreboard to 41-49 entering the locker room
  • Five consecutive Cantey points made it a two-possession score-line, 46-52, 1:18 into the second, as did a Hurst jumper at the 16:32 mark, 48-54, but HFU could never get any closer
