Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jefferson Pulls Away Late to Defeat Men’s Basketball on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – The game was tied at 46 entering the final 12 minutes and the HFU men's basketball was within three with seven and a half minutes to go, but Jefferson used 10 unanswered to pull away for a 65-82 win over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon inside of the Campus Center.

Prior to the contest, the Tigers honored the senior class of Jake McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Wildwood Catholic), David Robinson Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy), and managers Liam Cunningham and Brendan Wescott.

Individual Highlights
  • McGonigle and Robinson Jr. led all players with five assists and nine rebounds, respectively, in their collegiate finales
  • Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School (CC of Philadelphia)) topped Holy Family with a season-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 3-of-4 free throws
  • Tazir Cantey (Lindenwold, N.J./Eastern Regional) (6-of-10 field goals) and Ethan Pires (Dover, Del./The Pennington School (Millersville University)) (4-of-7) were also in double-figures with 13 points apiece

Inside the Box Score
  • The Tigers outshot Jefferson 43.1 to 42.9 percent, but the Rams had 12 more field goals attempts thanks to five more offensive rebounds, 11-16, and eight less turnovers, 9-17

How it Happened
  • Jefferson jumped out to a 5-13 edge just over six minutes in, but HFU would storm back with nine in a row, the first five of which were scored by Pires, to take its first lead on an Aamir Hurst (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann Goretti) floater just over eight minutes into the action
  • The Tigers led by as many as five twice, including when a Holmes layup made it 23-18 with eight and a half minutes left in the first
  • Jefferson came back with the next six and after exchanging leads, the Rams closed the period with the final six points for a 28-36 halftime cushion
  • After HFU opened the scoring out of the locker room, back-to-back baskets gave Jefferson the first of two double-digit advantages in the opening minutes of the second half
  • The Tigers immediately came back with seven in a row to begin a 14-4 surge that ended the game tied at 46 on a Holmes layup with 12:23 to play
  • Holy Family could never regain the lead though, as the Rams responded with a 3-pointer to go on top for good
  • Two Holmes foul shots cut the deficit to 48-49 at the 11:15 mark, and the Tigers were still within a single possession, 57-60, on a Cantey layup with 7:47 showing, but that is when Jefferson tallied the 10 unanswered
