Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Overcomes Double-Digit Deficit; Downed by Late Jefferson Run

PHILADELPHIA – The HFU men's basketball stormed back from a 34-47 deficit with under eight minutes remaining to tie the score at 49 with 1:39 to go, only for Jefferson to answer with an 0-11 run to end the game in a 49-60 final inside of the Campus Center on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School) and Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) combined for nine points in the 13-2 surge that tied things up on Omarion Jett's (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) layup, as the Tigers had held the Rams to just two points over 8:42.

Jefferson had an immediate response though, in the form of the second half's only 3-pointer by either team just 14 seconds later.

The Rams then made eight straight free throw attempts over the final 53 seconds.

Inside the Box Score
  • The free throw line was a major factor, with Jefferson making 24-of-26 foul shots compared to HFU's 6-of-16

Individual Highlights
  • Shields led all players with a season-best 19 points and added seven rebounds
  • Tairi Ketner (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) was also in double-figures with 11 points, to go along with a game-high 10 boards for his fourth double-double of the season
  • Jett added eight rebounds and seven points

How it Happened
  •  The first half was played within five points, with six lead changes and four ties, until a Shields 3-pointer made the score 31-25 with just 15 seconds left
  • Jefferson came right back down the floor and hit a trifecta of its own for a 31-28 score-line entering the locker room
  • HFU would go the first 11:58 of the second half without making a field goal, making just three foul shots as the Rams outscored the Tigers 3-19 to establish the game-high 13-point advantage
