PHILADELPHIA – After three lead changes and a tie over the final 2:13, it was No. 3 Bentley prevailing, 57-62, over No. 20 HFU women's basketball in a battle of ranked teams inside of the Campus Center on Friday evening.
Holy Family led 46-38 entering the fourth quarter following a 21-6 third, but a 2-10 Falcons run tied the score at 48 with 5:54 to play.
The Tigers answered with baskets by
Skyler Searfoss (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe Area) and
Jessica Riepe (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro), the second coming with 3:16 showing, but Bentley countered with seven straight, ending with a layup for a three point edge with 1:32 to go.
Out of a timeout,
Kaelah Carter (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker (The College of Saint Rose)) tied the game with a 3-pointer with 1:06 on the clock, but the Falcons made with a free throw just 26 seconds later.
Holy Family was not done yet, as a
Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) jumper with just 20 seconds left brought the scoreboard to 57-56.
Bentley came through with a clutch 3-pointer though, and the Tigers would turn the ball over on their final two possessions.
Individual Highlights
- Hinkle led all players with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three steals for her third consecutive double-double
- Carter was also in double-figures with 13 points, including making 4-of-6 3-pointers
- Searfoss and Carolyn Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) added nine and eight, respectively, with each dishing out a team-high three assists
How it Happened
- Holy Family bounced back from an early 2-6 deficit with 12 unanswered, 9 of which came from Hinkle as she put the Tigers on top by eight for a first time, 14-6, on a layup with 2:47 left in the first
- After Bentley closed with the final five points of the period, the two teams exchanged baskets to begin the second until eight straight by the Falcons put them ahead 21-24 with 4:18 remaining in the half
- The Tigers responded with baskets by Lola Ibarrondo (Bristol, Pa./Neshaminy) and Prevost to momentarily regain the lead, only to have Bentley close strong once again as eight in a row propelled the Falcons to a 25-32 halftime cushion
- Bentley actually opened the 21-6 third quarter with a layup for a game-high nine point advantage, but HFU closed on a 16-3 surge over the final 5:57, including eight straight in the last 1:26 ending with Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) beating the buzzer
