STATEN ISLAND – Trailing 43-48 entering the fourth quarter, the HFU women's basketball team outscored College of Staten Island 22-10 in the final period en route to a 65-58 triumph over the Dolphins on Saturday afternoon.
HFU held CSI to just two points over the first 8:16 of the quarter, as
Skyler Searfoss (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe Area) and
Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) combined for nine of the 11 unanswered that put the Tigers ahead 54-48 on Searfoss' layup with 5:39 remaining.
After the Dolphins scored their first basket of the period 24 seconds later, a
Jessica Riepe (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) 3-pointer and Searfoss three-point play completed an 18-2 surge for the game's only double-digit lead, 60-50, with 3:53 left.
Staten Island got as close as 62-58 with an even minute on the clock, but the Dolphins could never make it a one-possession game as Searfoss made three free throws in the final 36 seconds.
Individual Highlights
- Searfoss scored 10 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter to fuel the comeback, and she added a team-high four steals and three assists, as well as six rebounds
- Hinkle fell one rebound shy of a double-double as she led all players with nine boards, to go along with 11 points
- Riepe scored a team-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 3-of-6 triples
- The senior now ranks seventh in program history with 139 career 3-pointers
- Kaelah Carter (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker (The College of Saint Rose)) and Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) matched Searfoss with three assists, with Dougherty adding eight points and six rebounds
- Amy Ngo (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) contributed seven points
