Men’s Basketball Ends First Half Strong; Keeps Bridgeport at Distance in Second Half of 81-70 Win on Alumni Day

PHILADELPHIA – After closing the first half on a 14-6 run for a 44-35 advantage, the HFU men's basketball team's second half lead never got below three possessions in an eventual 81-70 victory over Bridgeport on Saturday inside of the Campus Center.
 
Individual Highlights
  • Tazir Cantey (Lindenwold, N.J./Eastern Regional) produced the game's second highest point total, a season-best 21, as he made 9-of-13 field goals
  • Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School (CC of Philadelphia)) also tallied a new season-best in scoring, 14 points, as he made 8-of-9 free throws
  • Aamir Hurst (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann Goretti) led all players with a career-best four blocks, while matching Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton (Jefferson University)) with a team-high three assists
  • Jake McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) fell one rebound shy of a game-high, as he led the Tigers with a career-best nine
  • Ethan Pires (Dover, Del./The Pennington School (Millersville University)) contributed 15 points
 
Inside the Box Score
  • With HFU making one more field goal, 25-24, the difference came at the free throw line as the Tigers' made 10 more foul shots, 26-16, despite a difference of just two attempts, 32-30 
  • Holy Family's bench outscored the Purple Knights' 28-13
 
How it Happened
First Half
  • Trailing by eight early and 13-19 eight minutes in, Holmes came off the bench to make seven foul shots in 3:17 to cap a 13-2 stretch that put HFU ahead 26-21 with 7:48 showing
  • Bridgeport fought back to within 30-29 with four and a half minutes left, but fellow sub Izaiah Credle (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna (Chesapeake College)) tallied eight points over the final 3:03 via two three-point plays and a buzzer-beater to put the Tigers on top 44-35 entering the locker room
Second Half
  • The Purple Knights began the second half cutting the deficit to 44-37, only to have Cantey begin and end a 10-2 flurry that gave HFU its first double-digit advantage
  • That lead remained in double-digits until the 1:33 mark, reaching as high as 75-57 on Cantey's floater with 5:40 to go
  • When Bridgeport did pull within eight, 78-70, the Tigers responded by holding the Purple Knights scoreless for the remainder of the contest
