LAKEWOOD, N.J. –
Gianna Monaco (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) equalized from the penalty spot late in the first half, but two second half goals by Georgian Court gave the Lions an eventual 2-3 win over the HFU women's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon.
It was
Lexi Murphy (Woolwich Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Saint Francis U)) drawing the foul that led to the penalty in the penultimate minute of the first half, and Monaco calmy converted her first career attempt from the spot for her first goal of the year just minutes after coming on as a sub.
After GCU scored in the 56th and 71st minutes for a two-goal cushion,
Hannah Florentino's (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) first goal of the season gave the Tigers life with 13 and a half to play, but
Maura Kilkenny (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Little Flower) was denied in the only shot on frame down the stretch in the 87th minute.
Holy Family outshot Georgian Court 14-9, including 8-5 on net, with
Brynn Hess (Benton, Pa./Benton) and
Alyssa Hooten (Pocono Summit, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) registering double the amount of attempts as any other player with four apiece.
The Lions started quickly with the match's first three attempts, all in the opening 3:02, but HFU recorded seven of the final nine of the first 45 minutes.
It was GCU who struck first against the grain of play in the 22nd minute though, after
Jessica Levush (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and Hess had both been denied by the Lions' goalkeeper in the opening 12:11.
Holy Family continued to push following the score, with
Maddie Maguire (Sewell, N.J./Nazareth Academy (Rider)) firing on net a half hour in, and
Jaina Preuhs (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) made her only save of the opening half moments after the equalizer to keep it tied at 1-1.
Hooten shot on frame in the second minute of the second half, but it was GCU taking the lead via the penalty spot with an even 35 minutes left on the clock.
Hess was rebuffed once more two minutes later, and both she and Hooten saw attempts miss in the minutes prior to the Lions' third goal.
