Softball Erases Pair of First Inning Deficits in Sweep of Lincoln

BENSALEM, Pa. – The Holy Family University softball team fell behind in the first innings of both games, before quickly responding en route to sweeping Lincoln, 4-2 and 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Bensalem High School.

Individual Highlights
  • Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) both earned saves with three innings of scoreless relief, with each striking out two and walking one
    • Clayborne's in game one was the first of her career as she gave up just two hits, while Ciasullo surrendered just three
    • Clayborne would go on to reach three times at the plate in the nightcap as she went 2-for-3 with a base on balls and run scored
  • Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) won game two with four innings of one-run ball in which she struck out eight with no walks and three hits allowed
  • Paige Tidaback (Carteret, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas) won the opener, surrendering two earned on six hits with five strikeouts and no base on balls
  • Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) doubled twice in game one, while Kylee Jones (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)) scored twice after reaching twice via a hit and walk
  • Carlie Miller (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Gabrielle Wiley (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) joined Clayborne with two base knocks in the nightcap, with Miller scoring once and driving in another, while Erin Stilton (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) also reached twice via two base on balls

Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family pitchers struck out 17 over the course of the doubleheader, with the Tigers striking out just four times at the plate

How it Happened
Game One
  • Both teams scored in the first, with Holy Family answering Lincoln's run with one of its own following to a leadoff error
  • The Lions would regain the lead in the third though, thanks to two hits and two stolen bases with two outs
  • HFU stranded a second straight runner in scoring position in the third, following a Hagy one-out double, but after Tidaback left a Lion on third in the fourth the Tigers would close out the scoring in the bottom-half
  • The inning began with consecutive outs, but Dana Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (Stockton)) would keep the frame alive with the first of four straight two-out singles
    • Jones' plated Moser after she had stolen second, before Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) and Ciasullo added the game-winning RBI and unneeded insurance
  • Clayborne faced the minimum in the fifth and sixth, before Moser helped her get out of trouble with a game-ending double play on a lineout to center field
Game Two
  • All the scoring came in the first, as the first six Tigers that came to the plate reached to quickly erase a second consecutive first inning deficit
  • Madison Grubb (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway), Miller and Clayborne led off with three straight singles, the second of which tied the score, before Stilton drew her first walk to load the bases
    • Maria Leedom's (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy (Shippensburg)) single put HFU on top for good and Emily Siwek (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) added a fifth single of the frame for a 3-1 advantage before an error completed the scoring
  • Patterson did not allow a runner to reach scoring position in each of her final three frames, retiring Lincoln in order in both the second and third
  • Ciasullo faced the minimum in the fifth, stranded Lions on second and third in the sixth, and retired three in a row following a leadoff walk in the seventh
