LEESBURG, Fla. – The Holy Family University softball team began its spring break trip in Florida with four games over two days on Sunday and Monday.
Sunday, March 5
Edinboro (5-6 Loss)
The Tigers began play with a 5-6 walk-off defeat at the hands of Edinboro.
HFU had broken a 3-3 tie on a
Madison Grubb's (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway) two-RBI triple in the top of the seventh, only to have the Fighting Scots take advantage of an error to score two unearned runs in a three-run bottom-half.
Grubb was one of two Tigers to record three base knocks for her first career three-hit game.
Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) also finished with three hits, including opening the scoring with a single in the first and tying the score at 3-3 on a double in the sixth.
Edinboro responded to Holy Family's first inning run with one of its own, before adding another in both the second and third.
Kylee Jones' (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)) RBI single, the first of her career, cut the deficit to 2-3 in the fifth.
Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) doubled twice, the first of which led to the Tigers' first inning run, while
Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) and
Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) both reached base twice via a hit and a walk.
Brensen scored on Grubb's triple after opening the seventh with a single, with
Rylee Hobel (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) joining her in crossing home for her second run.
Winona State (0-7 Loss)
Following a scoreless first two frames, Winona State broke the deadlock with a two-run single in the third that turned out to be the game-winner.
The Warriors also scored multiple times in a two-run fourth and three-run sixth, totaling five unearned runs in all as
Carlie Miller (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) did not allow an unearned run in two innings of relief.
Jones led Holy Family with her first career multi-hit performance, which included a double.
Monday, March 6
Wheeling (4-9 Loss)
Both teams had big innings early, with the Tigers jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Wheeling answered with a six-run second.
The only other scoring came on three unearned runs in the sixth.
A Grubb single got the bottom of the first started, before Clayborne followed a Ciasullo walk with a two-run double. Hagy added an RBI groundout, and
Emily Siwek (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) put an exclamation point on the frame with an RBI single.
HFU advanced runners into scoring position in the second and third but could never cut into the deficit despite
Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) tossing 5.2 relief frames without surrendering an earned run.
Joenes had a second straight two-hit performance with a double, while Ciasullo reached twice via two base on balls.
West Virginia Wesleyan (2-6 Loss)
Holy Family led for a third time in four games after an unearned run in the top of the second, and the Tigers brought the potential tying run to the plate in the seventh.
Two errors sandwiched a
Jasmine Chui (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) single to load the bases with two outs, but WVW was able to secure the win after a Clayborne hit-by-pitch had made the score 2-6.
The Bobcats had responded to the unearned score in the second with a two-run bottom-half, before also plating twice in both the third and fifth.
