Six-Run First Lifts Softball to Split with Alliance

PHILADELPHIA – The HFU softball team wasted little time in jumping on Alliance with a six-run first in a 13-6 game one, but the Tigers were defeated 6-10 in the nightcap for a split at Bensalem High School on Wednesday afternoon.

Individual Highlights
  • Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) had two hits in both games, finishing the day 4-for-7 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI, three runs and a walk
  • Hagy, Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and Dana Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (Stockton)) all had multiple base knocks and multiple RBIs in game one
    • Moser had two extra-base hits, a triple and double, while Clayborne homered and Hagy doubled
  • Kylee Jones (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)) and Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) both had two hits, two runs and an RBI in the opener
  • Game one pitcher Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) earned a complete game win for the second day in a row
  • Paige Tidaback (Carteret, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas) pitched 3.1 innings of relief without allowing an earned run in the nightcap, as she surrendered just one base knock

How it Happened
Game One
  • Six of the first seven Tigers to come to the plate in the first reached, beginning with Jones' leadoff single
    • Madison Grubb (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway) and Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) followed with back-to-back walks and after Bresnen's RBI groundout opened the scoring, Hagy drove in two with her double
    • Moser then followed Clayborne's single with another two-RBI double, before Gina Olivieri (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Charter School) closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly
  • Alliance chipped away to within one with five runs over its next two at-bats, only for Moser to make it 7-5 with an RBI triple that drove in Bresnen, who had led off with a single, in the bottom of the third
  • Alliance made it a one0-run game once more in in the fifth, 6-7, but this time it was Clayborne providing a cushion with her two-run homer that also drove in Bresnen, who had singled once again
  • Holy Family added unneeded insurance with four runs on four hits in the sixth, which began with a Rylee Hobel (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) double
    • Jones, Ciasullo (RBI) and Hagy all singled, before Clayborne closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly
Game Two
  • HFU answered Alliance's four-run second with a three-run bottom-half, as Bresnen and Hagy led off with a single and RBI double before three consecutive two-out walks by Jasmine Chui (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South), Hobel and Jones cut the deficit in half
    • The Tigers then made it a one-run game on a fielder's choice
  • Hagy knotted the score at four with a solo home run in the third
  • Holy Family could never take the lead though, despite answering Alliance's three-run fourth with two in the bottom-half
    • Hobel and Jones led off with a single and double and after Grubb drove in Hobel with a sacrifice fly, Tidaback made it a one-run game once again, 6-7, on an RBI single
  • Tidaback retired six of the seven she faced in the fifth and sixth, but the Tigers would strand runners in scoring position in both frames
  • Alliance would then take advantage of two errors to pull away with a three-run seventh
