PHILADELPHIA – The HFU softball team opened Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a sweep of city-rival Chestnut Hill, 8-0 and 4-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
Individual Highlights
- Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) had a near perfect day, finishing 5-for-6 with a double, triple, walk, four RBI and two runs at the plate, while earning the win in the nightcap with a complete game in which she allowed just one run on four hits
- Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) picked up her first win of the season with a complete game one-hitter in the opener, striking out five with no base on balls
- Kylee Jones (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)), Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), Madison Grubb (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway), Paige Tidaback (Carteret, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Rylee Hobel (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) all had two-hit performances, with Jones adding two runs and two RBI and Hagy scoring twice
Inside the Box Score
- The Tigers outhit the Griffins 19-5, committed no errors and struck out just three times in the doubleheader
How it Happened
Game One
- Holy Family jumped on CHC with a three-run first, highlighted by RBI doubles by Ciasullo and Hagy that sandwiched the second out
- Patterson retired the first nine she faced, with the Tigers adding an unearned run in the third
- The Griffins finally got a baserunner with a leadoff double in the fourth, only for her to be stranded after advancing to third with one out
- HFU then put up the runs necessary for the run-rule in the fifth, beginning with an Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) base on balls and Ciasullo triple
- After an error plated the second run, Hagy singled before Jones followed two fielder's choices with a two-RBI single to complete the scoring
- Patterson would go on to work her fourth 1-2-3 frame in the fifth
Game Two
- Both teams scored once in the second, with Tidaback, Hobel and Dana Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (Stockton)) all recording singles in the top-half before Ciasullo stranded the bases loaded to avoid further damage in the bottom-half
- It was still 1-1 entering the fifth, when three consecutive singles by Jones, Grubb and Ciasullo gave HFU the lead for good
- That would be all she needed in the circle as she retired 11 of the final 13 batters she faced, highlighted by 1-2-3 frames in both the fifth and seventh
- The Tigers would add unneeded insurance in the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Tidaback and three walks by Ciasullo, Deanna Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Carlie Miller (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), the latter of which closed out the scoring
