Softball Holds Off Staten Island in Game Two to Salvage Split in Home-Opener

PHILADELPHIA – Paige Tidaback (Carteret, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas) stranded the bases loaded with a game-ending strikeout to secure a 6-5 win over College of Staten Island on Thursday afternoon at Bensalem High School in the HFU's softball team's home-opener.

The Dolphins had taken game one 6-10.

Individual Highlights
  • Tidaback earned her first collegiate win with her first career complete game, scattering eight hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings
  • Madison Grubb (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway) led the offense with two multi-hit performances to finish the day 4-for-7 with two doubles, four RBI, three runs, two stolen bases and a base on balls
  • Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) reached base in all four at-bats in game one, going 2-for-2 with two walks, while fellow freshman Gina Olivieri (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Charter School) reached base in all three at-bats in the nightcap after going 2-for-2 with a walk
  • Kylee Jones (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)) reached base multiple times in both contests, finishing the day 2-for-6 with a triple, four runs, two walks and a stolen base

How it Happened
Game Two
  • Holy Family scored two runs in each of its first two at-bats once again, beginning with a Jones walk and Grubb RBI single
    • Tidaback kept the frame alive with a two-out single, advancing Grubb to third which allowed her to come in on a wild pitch during the next at-bat
  • Oliveri led off the second with a single and after a one-out walk by Dana Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (Stockton)), Grubb came through with a two-out double for the 4-0 cushion
  • The Tigers then cancelled out CSI's third inning run with one of their own in the bottom-half thanks to an error, which proved costly on Oliveri's two-out RBI double
  • Tidaback worked a scoreless fourth, and HFU scored what turned out to be the game-winning run via a double steal executed by Grubb and Jones, who had singled with one out
  • Tidaback worked a scoreless fifth before running into trouble in a three-run sixth
  • Staten Island then cut the deficit to one on a one-out sacrifice fly in seventh, but after loading the bases with two outs Tidabeck was able to come through with the game-ending punch-out
Game One
  • Both teams had big innings early, with HFU answered CSI's five-run first with a two-run bottom-half after Jones led off with a triple and Grubb followed with a double
  • The Tigers then added two more in the second thanks to back-to-back walks by Jones and Grubb and back-to-back singles by Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and Bresnen to cut the deficit to 4-5
  • Holy Family could never tie the score though, despite a scoreless third, as the Dolphins strung together three consecutive two-out hits in the fourth to extend the cushion to 4-7
  • Staten Island added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, before the Tigers brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh
    • It all began with an error and after a walk by Bresnen, Maria Leedom (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy (Shippensburg)) made it 5-10 with an RBI single
    • Back-to-back outs were recorded, but a Gabrielle Wiley (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) single made a four-run deficit
    • Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) walked to load the bases, but the Dolphins were finally about to get the final out
