CLERMONT, Fla – The HFU softball team wrapped up its spring break trip with two games on both Thursday and Friday, with the Tigers notably defeating Kentucky Wesleyan in their opener on Thursday.
Thursday, March 9
Kentucky Wesleyan (7-3 Win)
HFU scored two runs in both the third and fourth to overcome a 1-2 deficit and take control, beginning with
Kylee Jones' (Hulmeville, Pa./Neshaminy (Rider)) first career home run that came after
Dana Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan (Stockton)) had led off with a single.
Four singles by
Angelina Bresnen (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan),
Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan),
Gina Olivieri (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia Charter School) and Moser, the latter two of which produced RBI, then plated the two runs in the fourth.
Those four runs would be enough for
Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), who went the distance allowing three runs on seven hits.
Holy Family added un-needed insurance in the sixth on
Madison Grubb's (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway) two-out, two-RBI double.
Grubb also played a part in the opening run after her one-out triple led to her coming home on a throwing error.
Grubb was one of five Tigers with two hits, joining Jones, Bresnen, Oliveri and Moser. Both she and Jones scored twice, with Jones also driving in two on the homer.
The two-hit performances were notably the first of Bresnen's and Oliveri's young careers.
Ashland (1-2 Loss)
Jones homered for a second straight game, knotting the score at 1-1 in the third, but Ashland's two-out double in the fourth turned out to be the game-winner despite HFU advancing runners into scoring position in both the sixth and seventh.
Jones had a second straight two-hit performance and her fifth time in seven games, while Ciasullo also finished with two hits, including a double that saw a Tiger thrown out at the plate for a potential go-ahead run in the third.
Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) limited Ashland to just five hits over six innings.
Friday, March 10
Seton Hill (0-1 Loss)
A second inning home run was the only scoring, despite HFU threatening in both the fourth and sixth.
Bresnen led off the fourth with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat, only to be stranded, and she also walked as the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth after a one-out single by Grubb and a two-out single by
Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon).
The freshman finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a base on balls.
Ciasullo threw a complete came for the second day in a row, scattering six hits in six innings.
Missouri-St. Louis
Holy Family erased an early second run with two of its own in the bottom half, as Hagy singled,
Emily Siwek (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) walked and Patterson doubled to tie the score.
Rylee Hobel (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) then walked to load the bases and after the second out, a Grubb base on balls gave the Tigers the lead.
The game remained 2-1 through five, despite HFU threating with runners in scoring position in each of its three at-bats, as Patterson held the Tritons in check until they broke out for five in the sixth.
Hagy produced her first two-hit game of the season, while Grubb, Bresnen and Siwek all drew two base on balls.
