Men’s Basketball Cannot Overcome Strong First Half by Regionally-Ranked East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Despite making its most 3-pointers in nearly eight years and outscoring regionally-ranked East Stroudsburg in the second half, the HFU men's basketball team could not overcome a large halftime deficit in a 93-113 loss to the Warriors on Sunday afternoon. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Eight Tigers scored at least eight points, led by Tairi Ketner (Philadelphia, Pa./Woodstock Academy (University at Albany)) tallying a season-best 14 on 4-of-6 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws
    • He added a game-high six rebounds
  • Aamir Hurst (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann Goretti), Izaiah Credle (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna (Chesapeake College)) and Jake McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) all scored 13, career-bests for the latter two
    • Hurst made 5-of-7 field goals and 3-of-4 3-pointers, while McGonigle sunk 4-of-5 field goals and all three of his 3-point attempts and paced HFU with four assists and a career-high three steals
  • Ethan Pires (Dover, Del./The Pennington School (Millersville University)) and Vernon Johnson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) were also in double-figures with 11 points each
    • Pires led all players with a season-best two blocks, while Johnson sunk all three of his 3-point attempts and matched McGonigle with three steals
  •  Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton (Jefferson University)) and Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School (CC of Philadelphia)) each chipped in eight points

How it Happened
  • Holy Family responded from an early 0-6 deficit to go ahead 10-8 on McGonigle's triple just over four minutes in
  • The two teams exchanged points as Ketner's foul shot knotted things up at 13 with 13:25 left in the first half, before ESU tallied 11 unanswered to take the lead for good
  • Pires' 3-pointer momentarily made it a single-digit deficit, 16-24, midway through the period, but the Warriors rattled off 11 in a row once again en route to a 36-57 halftime advantage
