Men’s Basketball Runs Past Cheyney, 98-66

PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated Cheyney 98-66 inside of the Campus Center on Wednesday evening. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Jason Shields (Scranton, Pa./Scranton (Jefferson University)) led all players with a career-highs of 23 points on 9-of-14 field goals and 5-of-9 3-pointers and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes for his first career double-double
  • Tairi Ketner (Philadelphia, Pa./Woodstock Academy (University at Albany)) fell one board shy of his first career double-double as he poured in a career-best 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 20 minutes, to go along with a game and career-high four blocks
  • Tazir Cantey (Lindenwold, N.J./Eastern Regional) approached a triple-double with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and career-bests of seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists
  • Ryan Holmes (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter School (CC of Philadelphia)) and Elijah Jakeman (Philadelphia, Pa./Abraham Lincoln) made it five Tigers in double-figures with respective season-bests of 11 and 10 points
    • Holmes added season-bests of seven boards, five assists and a team-high two steals
  • Jake McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Wildwood Catholic) contributed season-bests of eight rebounds and five assists, while matching Holmes and Cantey with two steals
  • Tristin Harcourt (Newark, N.J./University) (four boards) and Vernon Johnson (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) (three assists) also set new season-highs
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Holy Family set new season-bests with 98 points, 54 rebounds, 29 assists, 11 steals and seven blocks
    • The 29 assists were the Tigers' most since Feb. 18, 2020, while the 54 rebounds were their most in two years
 
How it Happened
  • Holy Family trailed for a total of just 55 seconds after Cheyney opened the scoring with a 3-pointer
  • The Tigers responded with 12 unanswered, which both began and ended with a Shields 3-pointer
  • The Wolves got as close as 12-9 on a basket with 14:13, but back-to-back triples by Cantey and Shields extend the lead to multiple possessions for good
  • Cheyney was still within two possessions, 35-29, entering the final five and a half minutes of the first, but HFU would close the half on a 22-3 spurt over the final 5:27 for a 57-32 halftime cushion

The Tigers next take on a regionally-ranked opponent, when it travels to Southern Connecticut State for a 2 p.m. tip next Tuesday.
