PHILADELPHIA – Second and third set triumphs were not enough, as HFU volleyball could not hold off Chestnut Hill in a five-set defeat (14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 17-25, 10-15) to the Griffins on Thursday night.
After CHC won the opening set, the Tigers closed the second with three straight points, capped by an
Ava Kidd (Walton, Ky./Larry A. Ryle (Saint Anselm)) kill, and the third with the final two, on kills by
Sam Swenby (Evergreen, Colo./Evergreen (Loch Haven)) and
Natasha Yanief (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), to go ahead 2-1.
Holy Family was then up 10-6 in the fourth, only for the Griffins to come back.
In the fifth, the Tigers erased an 0-3 deficit to take a 6-5 lead after a run that included a block by Kidd and
Shelby Kinzer (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington).
HFU also led 7-6, before Chestnut Hill took control with five unanswered.
The Tigers were able to get as close as 9-11 as a Kidd kill attempted to spark a comeback, but the Griffins were able to hold on for the victory.
