NEW CASTLE, Del. – The HFU women's soccer team played the first of back-to-back matches at regionally-ranked opponents on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Wilmington 1-3 despite outshooting the Wildcats 15-10 and having nine corners to their one.
WilmU took the lead just 1:12 in and added another in the 10th minute, but
Lexi Murphy (Woolwich Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional (Saint Francis U)) was able to volley in
Rebecca Casper's (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) corner at the back post to cut the deficit in half in the 20th.
Jessica Levush (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) had the only remaining attempt on frame in the first half in the 24th minute, with both Casper and
Maura Kilkenny (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Little Flower) later firing high.
It was the Wildcats converting on the first shot on target of the second half though, regaining a two-goal advantage just under 10 minutes out of the break.
Holy Family could not threaten the Wilmington frame until the 82nd, when a
Bella Scurci (Selbyville, Del./Indian River) effort was denied.
A WilmU red card 3:03 ahead of the final whistle then provided HFU an opportunity to push, with Kilkenny registering two of the four attempts in the final 2:15, but the Tigers could not work the Wildcats goalkeeper.
Kilkenny and
Brynn Hess (Benton, Pa./Benton) tied a match-high with four shots.
Murphy is now second on HFU with two goals this season, while Casper's assist was the first of her career.
