PHILADELPHIA – The HFU women's volleyball team defeated fellow Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) unbeaten Jefferson (25-20, 26-24, 14-25, 25-21) on Wednesday evening, in a matchup of the previous two league champions.
Individual Highlights
- Isabella Mosquera (West Chicago, Ill./Saint Charles East) and Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had the match's two-highest block totals with six and a season-best four, respectively, and the two also led HFU in kills with 11 and nine
- Skylar Osenkarski (Harding, Pa./Holy Redeemer) posted a match-high .545 hitting percentage with six kills on 11 attacks, while Shelby Kinzer (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) also had six kills
- Kyla Sayson (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Institute of Technology) led all players with a season-best three aces
- Morgan Steck (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) led the Tigers with 33 assists, falling two digs shy of a double-double
- Faith Zehnder's (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) 15 digs were two shy of a match-high, while Mainerys Munoz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) was one shy of joining her in double-digits
Inside the Box
- Holy Family held an 8-2 advantage in blocks, as well as a 7-2 edge in aces
- While Jefferson had the slight edge in hitting percentage, .201-.195, HFU out-swung the Rams in each of the three sets it won
How it Happened
First Set
- A Sayson ace capped four unanswered to make the score 11-6, and Jefferson could get no closer than three
Second Set
- Neither team led by more than two until four straight HFU points, which featured back-to-back Hartney kills before a Kinzer ace, put the Tigers ahead 19-14
- Holy Family also led by five, 22-17, when two Hartney kills sandwiched one by Mosquera, and another Mosquera kill later gave the Tigers triple-set-point
- Jefferson staved off all three to knot the score at 24, but a Mosquera kill gave HFU a fourth set-point, which it converted via a Rams error
Third Set
- Jefferson scored five of the first six points and despite HFU getting as close as 4-5 on back-to-back Sayson aces, the Tigers could not threaten again after the Rams took the next five points
Fourth Set
- Jefferson responded from multiple early four-point deficits, including at 12-8, with an 8-2 surge to go ahead 14-16
- A Holy Family timeout regained the momentum as the Tigers took the next five points, capped by a Munoz service ace
- The Rams scored the next point to get as close as two, 19-17, but back-to-back kills by Kinzer and Osenkarski helped complete an 8-1 run that led to the HFU victory
