Tigers Split Doubleheader with Golden Rams



Bensalem, Pa. – The Holy Family University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against West Chester University on Saturday afternoon at Bensalem High School.  The Tigers took the opener by the score of 10-9 before the Golden Rams closed out the doubleheader with a 7-1 victory in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Senior Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md./Red Lion Christian Academy) and freshman Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) led the bottom of the sixth inning off with back-to-back singles as the Tigers found themselves trailing 8-5.  Two batters later freshman Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) singled to leftfield to score Smith and as a result made the score 8-6.  Senior Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) drew a walk to load the bases with one out in the inning.  Freshman Sam Ciasullo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) stepped to the plate and launched a shot over the left-centerfield fence to clear the bases and give the Tigers a 10-8 lead.
 
* Ciasullo retired the first batter in the seventh but after back-to-back singles she was lifted for freshman Jalecia Blackston (Levittown, Pa./Bucks County Technical).  Blackston retired the first batter she faced but a double by Grace Aguilar made the score 10-9 with two outs in the inning.  However, Blackston forced West Chester into a ground out to record the final out of the game.
 
* Holy Family led 3-0 after the first two innings before West Chester followed with a single run in the third and four runs in the fourth to lead 5-3.
 
* The Tigers tied the game at 5-5 with two runs in the fifth.  Ciasullo and junior Devyn Dydak (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) each had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* West Chester scored three runs in the sixth to break the tie.  Olivia Mock highlighted the inning with a two-run single.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Ciasullo finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a season-high five RBI and earned the win in the pitching circle for her second victory of the season.
 
* Smith was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Hagy went 3-for-4 with two runs.  The top two hitters in the lineup finished a combined 5-for-7 with five runs. 
 
* Senior Jasmine Martinez (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Polytechnic) also had multiple hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.
 
* For West Chester, Aguilar was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of walks.  She scored three runs and drove in four. 
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, the Golden Rams tallied seven runs off 13 hits, while starting pitcher Makenzie Edwards held the Tigers to just two hits in the game while allowing one run.
 
* Leading 3-1 entering the fifth inning, West Chester blew the game open with a four-run inning.  Back-to-back doubles to start the inning was the beginning of a five-hit inning for the Golden Rams.  Abigail Quinn recorded a two-run double in the inning.
 
* Senior Stephanie Uribe (San Diego, Calif./Liberty Charter High) scored the Tigers' lone run in the second inning on a wild pitch.  Uribe's run at the time tied the game at 1-1. 
 
* The Golden Rams regained the lead in the third with a run scoring double by Aguilar.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Junior Maria Leedom (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy (Shippensburg)) and freshman Alexis Letizia (Toms River, N.J./Donovan Catholic) each went 1-for-3 in the game for the Tigers.
 
* For West Chester, Haleigh Karcher went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Quinn led the team with RBI after a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
 
All-Time Results
Today marked the 27th and 28th meetings between Holy Family and West Chester since the start of the 2002 season.  The Tigers are now 8-20 versus the Golden Rams in the all-time series.  Holy Family's game one victory ended an eight-game losing streak versus West Chester marking the team's first win against the Golden Rams since 2013.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Sunday as the Tigers host the College of Staten Island in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 12 p.m.
