Tigers Fall to East Stroudsburg in Home Opener



Bensalem, Pa. – The Holy Family University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader against East Stroudsburg University in the team's home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Bensalem High School.  The Warriors defeated the Tigers by the scores of 7-0 and 5-0.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* East Stroudsburg scored the game's first run in the opening inning when Denva Shaw-Tait came through with a bases-loaded single to leftfield.  Freshman Lauren Hagy (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) prevented further damage as she fired a strike to the plate nailing Molly Nies for the third out in the inning.
 
* The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Warriors until ESU tallied four runs in the top half of the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.  Gianna Coyle highlighted the inning with a two-run single. 
 
* East Stroudsburg's Katie Zaun (4-1) took advantage of the run support to earn her fourth win of the season.  Zaun held the Tigers scoreless through seven innings while striking out 13 batters.
 
* The Warriors added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Senior Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md./Red Lion Christian Academy) went 2-for-3 for the Tigers, while senior Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) and freshman Emma Clayborne (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) each went 1-for-3 in the game. 
 
* For the Warriors, Shaw-Tait went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Coyle also finished with multiple hits going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. 
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* A three-run second inning as all the Warriors would need as the pitching staff held the Tigers scoreless in the night cap.  Brooke McKeown drove in a pair of runs in the inning with a single down the left field line.  Earlier in the inning, the Warriors scored the first run off a passed ball.
 
* McKeown drove in her third run of the game in the top half of the fourth to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead.
 
* East Stroudsburg added a run in the seventh off the bat of Ashley Spencer who drove in Reilly Vicendese with a single to left field.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Freshman Deanna Moser (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) recorded the Tigers lone hit with a leadoff single in the third inning.  Smith reached base twice in the game as she drew two walks.
 
* The Warriors' Paige Zigmund started the game and went three innings holding the Tigers to one hit while striking out two batters.  Leigh Ann Jenkins (3-0) closed out the final four frames to earn the win as she struck out eight of the 12 batters she faced.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th and 12th meetings between Holy Family and East Stroudsburg since the start of the 2005 season.  The Tigers are now 3-9 versus the Warriors in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Wednesday as the Tigers travel to face the College of Staten Island in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 2 p.m.
