Women’s Basketball Holds Off Staten Island in Season-Opener

STATEN ISLAND – The HFU women's basketball closed the first quarter strong, building a double-digit advantage that lasted until the fourth, proving important in holding off College of Staten Island, 75-66, in the Tigers' season-opener on Saturday. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Ava Morrow (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) led Holy Family with 13 points and was second on the Tigers with seven rebounds, both one shy of a career-high
  • Carolyn Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) fell one rebound shy of her second career double-double with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a team-best in boards
  • Skyler Searfoss (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe Area) made it three Tigers in double-figures with 11 points, highlighted by making 9-of-10 free throws, in her college debut
  • Lindsay Tretter (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Wood), Moe Moore (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (3-of-4 shooting), Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) and Jessica Riepe (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) (3-of-5) all finished with eight points, with Hinkle adding seven rebounds in her collegiate debut 
  • Emma Ingersoll-Weng (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) and Claire Dougherty (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman) notably both made their collegiate debuts

  • Holy Family outrebounded CSI 38-31, leading to a 23-6 edge in second-chance points
  • The Tigers made triple the amount of 3-pointers as the Dolphins, 6-2
  • HFU shot 78.1 percent (25-of-32) from the free throw line, compared to CSI's 68.8 percent (24-of-35)
    • The 25 foul shots were the Tigers' most since making 30 in a win over USciences on Jan. 20, 2016
 
How it Happened 
First Quarter
  • College of Staten Island took its last lead, 12-13, on a 3-pointer 5:21 into the action
  • The Dolphins also momentarily tied the score at 14 2:27 later, before HFU closed the quarter on a 12-2 flurry the featured 3-pointers from Morrow and Riepe and ended with Searfoss beating the buzzer to make the score 26-16
Second Quarter
  •  Riepe then opened the second with another triple, and the advantage reached as high as 15, 36-21, when Tretter made a triple of her own with 2:48 remaining in the first half
  • Jenn Kokolus' (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) free throw 34 seconds ahead of the break brought the scoreboard to 40-26 entering the locker room 
Third Quarter
  • A Hinkle foul shot with 2:04 left in the quarter gave the Tigers' the second of their game-high 21-point leads, 57-36
  • Anujin Dashdorj (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) made two free throws with two seconds showing to make sure the advantage remaining 20, 61-41, entering the fourth
Fourth Quarter
  • The lead was still 18, 65-47, when Koklus made two foul shots with 7:50 to go, before CSI made its run with 13 unanswered that brought the Dolphins within five, 65-50, with 3:01 to play
  • Tretter converted an and-one 20 seconds later though, re-establishing some breathing room, and even though CSI got as close as four, 64-60, with 1:13 remaining, HFU secured the victory by making 7-of-10 free throws down the stretch
