Women’s Soccer Advances to CACC Semifinals for Third Straight Season with 1-0 Win at Goldey-Baecom

WILMINGTON, Del. – Gianna Monaco's (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) goal in the 28th minute of play was enough to lift fifth-seeded Holy Family over fourth-seeded Goldey-Beacom in the First Round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on Monday afternoon.

The result marks the Tigers' third consecutive 1-0 victory and means HFU advances to the CACC Tournament Semifinals for the third season in a row.

The only goal of the match came when Brynn Hess (Benton, Pa./Benton) found Jacqueline Ziegler (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) in the middle of the field, who then connected a one-time pass to Stephanie Marino (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy). Marino spotted a darting run by Monaco across the backline and slipped a precise through ball around a defender. With just the keeper to beat, Monaco rolled the ball into the left side of the goal.

Brianna Pudlo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert), who was named CACC Goalkeeper of the Year on Monday, stopped all three shots that she faced to record her eight shutout of the season.

Up Next

  • Monaco's fifth goal ties a career-best and matches Ziegler for the team lead
  • Marino's assist was her first of the season and her second goal contribution in two matches
  • Monaco had a match-high two shots on goal, putting both of her attempts on target
  • The Tigers outshot the Lightning 13-9

How it Happened
First Half
  • Maddie Maguire (Sewell, N.J./Nazareth Academy (Rider)) had the first chance of the day, heading a shot over the bar just 1:23 into the match
  • Three minutes later, Monaco found the target with an attempt that was saved by the Goldey-Beacom keeper
  • HFU continued to pressure GBC with shots and corner kicks until the 42nd minute, when the Lightning recorded their only shot of the first half
  • Jenna Slavin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) almost doubled the Tigers' advantage when she saw her effort hit the post with just 29 second left in the half
Second Half
  • The first meaningful chance of the half came when Alyssa Hooten (Pocono Summit, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) forced a diving save from the Goldey keeper, who pushed it behind for a corner kick
  • The next big opportunity came when Hess picked off a pass and let an attempt fly from 25 yards out, striking the crossbar
  • Goldey-Beacom forced another save in the 61st minute when a header was handled comfortably by Pudlo
  • Maguire forced another diving save out of the keeper two minutes later
  • Pudlo made her third and final save of the match with just over ten minutes left, which would turn out to be the last shot of the game from either team
