Men’s Soccer Uses Early Barrage to Knock Off Regionally-Ranked CACC Leader Wilmington

PHILADELPHIA – In a match that featured all five goals scored in the opening 21:52, the HFU men's soccer team had an answer to both of regionally-ranked Wilmington's goals as the Tigers held off the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) leaders 3-2 on Tuesday evening at Tiger Field.

Holy Family has now defeated the Wildcats twice in the last three years, after failing to do so since 2002 prior.

After Dakota Taylor (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) opened the scoring on a Gavin Rowan (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) cross in the eighth minute, the Tigers immediately answered Wilmington's two goals in the 16th and 22nd.

A breakaway first led to Taylor slotting across face to an unmarked Marcelo Ibarra (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) 1:11 after the first Wildcat goal.

The second response came just 18 seconds after Wilmington's second goal, as Sean Touey (Rockledge, Pa./Abington) collected a long ball from Joseph Amabile (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) on the restart, held off a defender and beat the keeper to make the score 3-2.

Luke Shank (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) made six saves in the victory, five of which came to preserve the lead, and he watched as the Wildcats skied a penalty in the 61st minute.

Inside the Box Score
  • Shank's eight wins this year are now tied for fourth in the program's single-season history
  • Touey's team-high seven goals tie his career-best from last year
  • Ibarra and Taylor are tied for the second on the team with four goals apiece
  • Taylor tied a match-high with six attempts, and he now has three matches with three points this season
  • Amabile's assist was his second of the year, while Rowan's was his first
  • Holy Family scored on three of its five shots on net

How it Happened
First Half
  • Wilmington had the first attempt of the evening, forcing a Shank stop five minutes in
  • The Tigers' only shot of the half that did not rattle the back of the net was one by Taylor that was saved in the 13th minute
  • The Wildcats had the final five attempts of the half, but the only one that worked Shank was the final one 2:25 ahead of the break
Second Half
  • HFU had the first two shots of the period, including Joel Richmond (Bridgetown, Barbados/Church Farm) missing high 5:27 in
  • Wilmington had the next nine attempts, with Shank making saves in the 63rd, 70th, 73rd and 76th minutes
  • The Wildcats' final shot missed wide in the 84th
  • As Wilmington pressed for an equalizer, the Tigers had five opportunities to add insurance over the final five minutes to no avail
