Tigers Fall to Nationally Ranked Chargers



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest to nationally ranked No. 13/19 Dominican College by the score of 69-52 on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How It Happened
 
* Dominican led majority of the game with the exception of the opening minute when the Tigers opened the game with a three-pointer.  With the game tied 7-7, five minutes in, the Chargers went on a 19-9 run to grab a double-digit lead.  A three-pointer by Jalen Burgess made the score 26-16 at the 9:17 mark.
 
* Dominican led by as many as 15 points in the first half at 31-16 and took a 34-22 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* In the second half the Tigers chipped away at the Chargers' lead and cut the game to single digits (42-39) at the 11:15 mark after junior Daniel Fleming (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) scored a basket off an offensive rebound. Holy Family cut the deficit down to as low as eight points on multiple occasions down the stretch but were never able to get a stop on defense. Each time the Chargers responded with a score on the other end to keep the Tigers at bay. 
 
* With 4:48 remaining the Tigers made it a 55-47 game after a basket by junior Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan).  From there, the Chargers closed out the game on a 14-5 run. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Freshman Manny Toha (Newark, N.J./Marist) led the Tigers with 19 points, while junior Daniel Fleming (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) finished with 18 points and six rebounds.  Esposito totaled a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with four points, two blocks and a steal.
 
* For Dominican, Burgess scored a game-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, including 5-of-9 from deep range.  He also led the team with 10 rebounds to record a double-double.  Joshua Serrano finished with 11 points, while Wahaad Johnson came off the bench to contribute 12 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 24th meeting between Holy Family and Dominican since the start of the 2003-04 season.  The Tigers are now 9-15 versus the Chargers in that span. Dominican has won the last six contests in the series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 26 as the Tigers face city rival Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest.  Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Sorgenti Arena.
