Tigers Split Season Opener Tri-Match



Bridgeport, Conn. – The Holy Family University women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches to start the season as the Tigers competed at the University of Bridgeport in a tri-match with the Purple Knights and Assumption University on Saturday.  The Tigers fell to the Greyhounds, 3-1, but rebounded after the loss to defeat the host Purple Knights, 3-1.

How It Happened (vs. Assumption)
 
* The Tigers dropped the first set, 25-14, but came back in the second set with the win by the same score.  With the set tied 8-8, Holy Family scored four straight points and eight of the next nine in the set to take a commanding 16-9 lead.  Junior Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) tallied three kills in the 8-1 run.  Holy Family would go on to lead by as many as 11 points at 23-12 before taking the set at 25-14.
 
* The third set the Greyhounds rallied from behind as the Tigers led by as many as six points late in the set with a 19-13 advantage.  Assumption eventually tied the set at 23-23 and grabbed the lead after a service ace by Brandi Montoya.  Both teams would exchange the next four points before the Greyhounds clinich the set off a kill by Carly Goodhue at 27-25.
 
* The fourth set, which turned out to be the final one in the match, was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams.  The set saw three lead changes and six ties throughout.  The final lead change came in the final moments when Assumption broke a 22-22 tie by scoring the final three points of the match.
 
Inside the Box Score (vs. Assumption)
 
* Senior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) led the team with 17 kills, while Hartney added 15 kills.
 
* Senior Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) totaled 46 assists to go along with 12 digs.
 
* Junior Mainerys Munoz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) led the team with a match-high 13 digs.
 
* Junior Skylar Osenkarski (Harding, Pa./Holy Redeemer) finished with double-digit kills as she totaled 10 in the match.
 
* Assumption's Alexis Distasio totaled a match-high 23 kills, while Kyra Belden finished with a match-high 49 assists.
 
 
How It Happened (vs. Bridgeport)
 
* Holy Family opened the match with victories in the first two sets by the scores of 25-23 and 25-22.  In the opener it was a back-and-forth affair with the Tigers coming through late with the final surge.  A kill by Hartney tied the set at 22-22 before back-to-back attack errors by the Purple Knights gave the Tigers a 24-22 advantage.  Hartney clinched the set for the Tigers with a kill; her sixth of the set.  
 
* In the second set the Tigers led nearly the entire match despite allowing the Purple Knights to come within a couple of points of the lead multiple times.  Holy Family led by as many as six points late with the score at 22-16.  Bridgeport made things interesting with three straight points to make the score 24-22, but a kill by Covington sealed the win to allow the Tigers to go up 2-0 in the match.
 
* Bridgeport extended the match with a 25-16 victory in the third set in which the Purple Knights held the Tigers to just seven kills.
 
* Holy Family's offense came back alive in the fourth set but not right away.  The Purple Knights opened with a. 7-1 run before the Tigers fired off 15 kills the rest of the way overcome the deficit.  The Tigers scored 12 of the next 17 points in the set to grab its first lead since scoring the initial point in the set.  After Bridgeport tied the set back up at 13-13, Holy Family went on a 5-0 run to lead 18-13.  From there the Tigers maintained the lead to take the set, 25-20, for the match victory.

* Silks totaled another 46 assists to finish the day with 92 and 11.5 assists per set average.  She also totaled eight digs versus the Purple Knights.
 
* Hartney led the team with a match-high 17 kills to finish the day with 32 (4.0 per set).
 
* Sophomore Natasha Yanief (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) recorded a career-high 10 kills.
 
* Covington added 12 kills and 12 digs, while Osenkarski and senior Tayana Bennett (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill-Freedom World Academy) each totaled eight. 
 
* Junior Maeve Boylan (Ridley Township, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) recorded a match-high 16 digs to go along with a team-high three aces.
 
* Bridgeport's Paola Hernandez led the team with 16 kills and 16 digs.  Jaden Drollinger totaled 48 assists.
 
All-Time Series
It's been a while since Holy Family and Assumption faced one another.  Both teams faced off one other time back in 2005 with the Greyhounds winning, 3-0.  Holy Family and Bridgeport met as recent as the 2019 NCAA Division II East Region semifinals.  Today's win marked the first in the all-time series for the Tigers in which the Purple Knights hold a 5-1 advantage.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 11 as the Tigers compete in the Post University Invitational in Waterbury, Conn.  The Tigers will face Southern Connecticut State University (1 p.m.) and Bentley University (3 p.m.) in a pair of non-conference matches.
