Tigers Pick Up Two at Post Invitational



Waterbury, Conn. – The Holy Family University women's volleyball team came away with a pair of victories at the Post University Eagles Invitational on Saturday at the Drubner Center.  The Tigers defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 3-1, and capped the afternoon with a five set victory against Bentley University.

How It Happened (vs. So. Connecticut)
 
* After dropping the first set by the score of 25-12, the Tigers got back on track and went on to win the next three sets to take the match.  Holy Family made an uncharacteristic nine errors in the first set alone, but only made 12 combined in the next three sets. In turn, Southern Connecticut went from making just two errors in the opener to averaging just over six errors over the final three sets.
 
* In the second set the Tigers overcame a 7-3 deficit early on and then used a 4-0 run with the score tied at 16-16 to pull away. Three straight attack errors by the Owls capped with a kill from senior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) gave the Tigers a 20-16 lead.  The Owls came within a point of tying the set at 21-20 but after a Holy Family timeout the Tigers rallied off three straight kills before taking the set, 25-22. 
 
* Holy Family increased its lead in the match with a victory in the third set.  Tied 10-10, the Tigers scored three straight points and never looked back.  The Tigers committed just two errors on the attack in the set and took advantage of seven attack miscues by the Owls. Holy Family scored the final four points of the set to cap the scoring.
 
*  The Tigers won the match after overcoming another 7-3 deficit.  Holy Family took the lead for good after Southern Connecticut led 13-12 in the set.  Senior Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) jump-started a mini 4-0 run with a kill that gave the Tigers a 16-13 advantage.  The Owls would make it a one point set at 17-16 but the Tigers never relinquished the lead.  Junior Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) recorded back-to-back kills before an Owls' attack error made the score 20-16.  Holy Family closed the set and match with two straight kills by Covington.
 
Inside the Box Score (vs. So. Connecticut)
 
* Covington finished with a match-high 15 kills to go along with eight digs.
 
* Junior Skylar Osenkarski (Harding, Pa./Holy Redeemer) set a new career-high with a 12-kill performance while committing just two errors on 28 total attacks.  Osenkarski finished the match with .357 attack percentage.
 
* Sophomore Faith Zehnder (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) recorded a team-high 20 digs in her season debut.
 
* Senior Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) paced the offense with 39 assists to go along with 14 digs.
 
*  Southern Connecticut's Layla Cortez totaled a team-high 13 kills, while Krishnalei So'oto recorded a match-high 28 digs.
 
How It Happened (vs. Bentley)
 
* The Tigers found themselves trailing 2-1 in the match entering the fourth set.  Holy Family never trailed in the set despite Bentley tying the score on two occasions early on in the set.  With the score tied 6-6, Holy Family ripped off seven straight points to take its largest advantage of the set. Bentley did cut the score to 19-17 but the Tigers went on to score six of the final 10 points of the set to tie the match at 2-2.
 
* In the fifth and decisive set, the Tigers carried over the momentum from the previous set to open with an 8-1 run.  The Tigers benefited from five errors by the Falcons in the opening run. The Tigers led by as many as eight points with the score 14-6 in their favor.  Bentley scored three straight points before another error gave the Tigers clinching point.

* Hartney led the match with a season-high 20 kills.
 
* Silks set a career-high with a match-best 28 digs to go along with 37 assists.
 
* Covington also reach 20-plus digs in the match as she finished with a season-high 21.
 
* Senior Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) tallied 11 kills to go along with six total blocks, including five block assists. 
 
* Zehnder recorded a career-high 26 digs as she finished the two matches with 46 digs all together.
 
* Junior Mainerys Munoz (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) also recorded double-digit digs as she totaled 15 in the match.
 
* Bentley's Ellie Wheeler led the Falcons with 16 kills, while Jazzy Burke totaled a match-high 30 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Holy Family and Southern Connecticut since the start of the 2005 season.  The Tigers are now 5-4 versus the Owls in the all-time series.  With Bentley, the Tigers are now 2-2 with the Falcons in the all-times series as both teams have met three times previously to today's match.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14 as the Tigers travel to face Millersville University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
