Tigers Serve Rams First Loss of the Season



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University women's volleyball team came away with a big early season Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory as the Tigers defeated cross-town rival Thomas Jefferson University, 3-0, on Thursday night at the Gallagher Center.  The game was originally scheduled to be played at Holy Family's Campus Center Gymnasium but due to unforeseen circumstances the matched switched venues.  The Oct. 21 match up will now be held at Holy Family.

How It Happened
 
* Holy Family led 2-0 in the match after taking the first two sets, which set up a thrilling third set between the Tigers and Rams.  The third set featured six lead changes and 12 ties with the biggest lead coming at 7-3 in favor of the Rams.  A back-and-forth ordeal to the very end.  With the set tied at 19-19, Holy Family scored three straight points to lead 22-19.  The Rams responded with three straight points to tie the set before each team exchange points.  Jefferson scored two straight points after two errors by the Tigers to lead 26-25, but Holy Family tied the set at 26-26 after a kill from senior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar).  The two teams exchanged points five more times before back-to-back kills by junior Allyssa Hartney (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) gave the Tigers a 30-29 advantage.  The Rams tied it at 30-30 with a kill from Kerrigan Candra but a service error followed giving the Tigers a 31-30 lead.  On the following rally the Tigers took the set with another kill by Hartney to end the set and match with a 32-30 win.
 
* Holy Family recorded a season-high 21 kills in the third set after combining for 23 in the previous two sets.  Hartney led the Tigers with eight kills in the third set, while senior Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) totaled six kills and Covington added five.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Hartney finished tied with a match-high 16 kills, while Covington and Johnson each finished with nine kills apiece.  Covington also totaled nine digs.
 
* As a team, Holy Family finished with 11 total blocks; second most in a match this season.  Junior Skylar Osenkarski (Harding, Pa./Holy Redeemer) led the team with five block assists, while senior Tayana Bennett (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill-Freedom World Academy) and Johnson each had four block assists.  Johnson also added two solo blocks to finish the night with six total blocks.
 
* Senior Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) had a match-high 39 assists to go along with 14 digs.
 
* Sophomore Faith Zehnder (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) led the Tigers with 17 digs.  Junior Maeve Boylan (Ridley Township, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) added 10 digs, while freshman Morgan Steck (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) had eight digs on the defensive end.
 
* Jess Molen led the Rams with 16 kills to go along with 18 digs.  Johnson led the match with 20 digs, while Kristine Guenther paced the Rams' offense with 27 assists.
 
* Jefferson entered tonight's match as the lone undefeated team in the CACC at 11-0.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 38th meeting between Holy Family and Jefferson dating back to the 2003 season.  The Tigers are now 11-27 versus the Rams in the all-time series.  Holy Family has won the last four match ups.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 as the Tigers travel to face Georgian Court University in a CACC contest.  Match time is set for 5 p.m. at the Wellness Center.
