Tigers Drop Home Opener to Clippers

Bensalem, Pa. – The Holy Family University softball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at home to Concordia College by the scores of 3-0 and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bensalem High School.

GM 1 Score: Concordia 3, Holy Family 0
GM 2 Score: Concordia 3, Holy Family 1
Records: Holy Family (0-4, 0-2 CACC) | Concordia (2-0, 2-0 CACC)
Location: Bensalem, Pa. (Bensalem High School)

How It Happened (Game 1)

* One swing of the bat turned out to be the difference in game one of the doubleheader.  After back-to-back singles by the Clippers to open the top half of the sixth inning, Myaiha Kelly came to the plate and connected on a three-run home over the left field fence to account for the game's only runs.

* In return, Kelly pitched a complete game shutout holding the Tigers to just three hits in the game, while striking out three batters on her way to her first win of the season.

Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

* Junior Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) (0-2) matched zeros with her counterpart through five innings.  Remington went the distance for the Tigers and struck out a season-high eight batters.

* Emily Siwek (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy), Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md./Red Lion Christian Academy) and Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) all recorded a hit for the Tigers.

* Kelly went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored for the Clippers.

How It Happened (Game 2)

* The Clippers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning in game two of the doubleheader.  Ellen Little and Emilie Olivier each had run scoring hits in the inning.

* Concordia added another run in the top half of the second when Carly Berezny drove in a run with a base hit to increase the Clippers lead to 3-0.

* The Holy Family defense came up clutch in the top half of the fifth inning.  The first three batters in the inning for the Clippers reached base via base hits.  However, the Tigers were able to get out of the jam without giving up a run.  A quick ground ball to third forced an out at the plate for the first out and back-to-back line drives to Smith at shortstop ended the threat of a potential big inning.

* The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Tigers finally got on the board.  Junior Elaina Hansen (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) led the inning off with a solo shot to center field to make the score 3-1.  However, that would be the only run on the day for the Tigers as the Clippers held on to the two run victory.

Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

* Holy Family had a trio of players record multiple hits in the game.  Smith finished 2-for-4 with a double as she finished the day with three total hits.  Hansen went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double.  Nichols also went 2-for-3 in game two and finished the doubleheader with three hits.

* Concordia's Ashley Walsh (1-0) picked up the win in the pitching circle as she went six innings allowing just one run off seven hits.  She struck out six batters.  Madison Shura pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
